Correct engine colors
Restoring to concours level 1967 GTO 400. Installing the lower pulley with the correct six bolt harmonic balancer. Have some questions:
1. Did the balancer bolts with the castle heads get painted engine color or left natural? 2. Did these bolts get a lock washer? 3. Did the balancer itself get painted blue metallic engine color? 4. Did the crank pulley (2 groove) get painted black, engine color or left natural? |

I bought an NOS balancer (9783144) that fits 1966 GTO. It came with a 2 groove pulley that was painted black from GM, so I thought the crank pulley on my '67 should be black too. Of course NOS replacement parts might not be the way it came through the assembly line. No one seems to know for sure. This car will be judged eventually so I want to get it correct from the start.

Here's two photos of the original painted balancer from my '67.
The entire balancer assembly was painted engine color. No lock washers behind the bolts. Grant |
