Default Carburetor pan seal

Some observations and questions regarding Ames Carburetor pan seals.

I purchase one seal in the mid-1980s and ran that on the car for decades of good use. Only recently did it begin to show signs of deterioration. Great product

I purchased another seal 1 to 2 years ago. I have never installed it in the engine compartment. It simply sat in storage with other parts. It is completely unusable. It has turned into sticky crumbs of foam. It was not stored near solvents or any corrosive substances.

I imagine the manufacturers have changed over the decades but this newer seal seems to be an entirely different material. Anyone know what has changed?

More importantly, does anyone know how to prevent this rapid deterioration? Is there a sealant spray or other product that can help preserve the usefulness of the seals?

Thanks for your time
