1974 TA Admiralty Blue Paint 50 yrs old What To Do?
My TA I ordered waited 5 mos. The paint was bad from Pontiac. Talked to zone rep in March 1974 about paint. He was willing to repaint car. I was 25 and I said it's a new car so I didnt repaint the car. I was happy to have the car not thinking of the future. The paint on the roof has small I guess bubbles and the leading edge of the hood
is showing metal light rust. I've been told the paint was placed to thin. Anyway what should I be thinking? Touch up?(I can possible get lacquer but is this a band aid fix)Tear car apart and. repaint with current paint technology. Yes the car is special 40k all original SD455. Strip, epoxy and paint it with base/clear. Best way for the midnight blue metallic. DO NOT single stage a metallic. The right shop will give you an outstanding finish.

Ok. Steve Ames told me years ago just do your best to preserve the car, original only once. Yet the deterioration! I only can imagine what a complete disassembly and reassembly would cost with base coat clear coat. That's what I'm in a dilemma about.

I'm nobody who should give advise on your issue...But, I have seen where pedigreed cars like yours track the amount of "original paint" to maintain the car in the most original manner. If it were mine I would do a touch up of the bad spots by a shop qualified to do such work. It's only original once.

Only original once regardless the flaws. Sure the car is worth $150k restored, but will cost you up to $75k to properly disassemble and repaint the car.
Preserve it the best you can even if small touch up is perhaps warranted or needed so it does not get worst. Plenty of products out there. Consult with a professional. Awesome car I bet!! |

Why are you against single stage metallics?

A good body man will find a way to preserve the original finish
The original gloss (or lack thereof) is a signature of the car when new from Pontiac. It could not be more important to keep it the way you got it new, given you are owner #1 and it is an SD, the last of the genuinely fierce Pontiac muscle cars.
Someone who knows what they are doing can spot in and blend the paint in a way that keeps it looking original, which is a much, much more important task on a FACTORY super duty car. They are only original once! You might consider reaching out to Scott Tiemann at SuperCar Specialties for his advice. He has done the best of the best Pontiacs, and his advice would carry a lot of weight with me. |

Preserve your original car.
Nice original cars are special and coveted. Have an experienced professional touch it up and detail it, don’t restore it.
