Weight of stock 67 GTO spindle and front drum brake/hub assembly?
I am considering swapping from stock front drum to a GM disc brake setup for weight savings. I don't have the stock spindle/drum off the car to compare. Does anyone have the weight or able to easily weigh stock spindle/brake/drum that I can use for comparison?
I searched forums and couldn't find anything. Thanks, Lowell |

It seems to me that a disk assy adds 6-8 lbs over a drum car. This is from factory literature. There are aftermarket aluminum calipers that may tip the scales in your favor.

I agree with that...the rotor and single piston iron calipers are heavy.

OEM disc brakes are most definitely heavier, probably by 25 pounds over drums.
Did a comparison many years ago while building my GTO into a bracket car, but I don’t remember the exact figures.

Yikes, I am glad I asked. I just replaced all the wear components on my current setup and it works well given the stock limitations and will stop my car from quarter mile speeds (118 mph or so) and it got me through Dragweek this year so I may focus on other upgrades, etc and save this effort until the car gets faster or just switch to aftermarket front discs to get the weight savings later. Thanks for the responses, Lowell

If you haven't done so already, Muscle Car Brakes has high performance shoes for drum brakes.

Not sure how fast you are planning on going, but myself (67 GTO) and a buddy (65 Chevelle) experienced the same thing; up to 120-121mph the stock drums work fine, at 123-124mph the stock drums don’t work well enough. I switched to Wilwood Dynalites (front only) and it stops incredibly better (could almost make the first turnoff if I wanted to), and he is doing the same. If you think you might go aftermarket down the road save the money from going with stock components as the weight savings (no real idea but it’s noticeable when handling the parts) are beneficial on the front end of the early (i.e. nose-heavy) A-bodies.
