Thanks! I feel my shortblock lasted beyond it's expectations. I'm just aggravated I didn't upgrade to a forged crank when I should have. Of course, you read all the comments how tough the factory N cranks are and think you're fine to leave it alone. I am pretty impressed that all the bearings look really good considering what happened!

My plan it to put an Ultrabell on it assuming the rest is good. I need to look at the converter, stator support and pump really close.

First, sorry for all that damage, hate to see that engine FUBAR Firechicken what was your compression on that engine? The prices nowadays make for an interesting build and timeline! Good luck to you on your next build!

It was a 463 with flat tops zero decked and 80cc chambers. That put me right at 11:1. Ran fine on 91 octane pump gas. This build is probably going to cost 50% more than it would have a few years ago....

Yes my 455 had the same failure as his on the same day at Norwalk and I had an Ohio cast crank.

Only heard of a couple of the offshore forgings breaking myself.
Looks like with these two blow ups one was certainly the crank without any split up the middle and the other might have cracked the block first.
Reading about all of this, I am paying attention considering the engine I put together.
Its a little better than both of these, but still a stock block.
No warm and fuzzies here.
But both of these had many, many runs on a cast crank too. One stock, one China cast.

yeah it sucks to see these two threads!! i have an ia2 and a forged crank in a street car with the rev limiter set at 5500 and i still worry!!

Yea well, you might want to prevent Pinging under load on the next build.

But in the early 90's, 91-93 with 11.5:1 would have me sensing a fluttering Ping sound on certain days and air conditions. Finally breached a Headgasket between CYLs on a hot highway drive. PMD Cast Crank was fine..

Changed my plans to be an 87 Street, 89 in the 1/4 mile for 9.00:1 with iron heads. PMD Cast crank and all still together.
Miss the ease of High Compression combos though.

Thanks Lowell! That was all with the same shortblock and heads. Just a couple cam swaps, an intake swap and a carb swap....and some weight loss.

Thanks Gary! It'll be back. Might not be this year, but next year for sure!

Definitely something to keep in mind. I didn't find any evidence upon teardown. All the bearings looked surprisingly good and no signs of main cap walk.

Inspect the piston tops for "erosion looking" surface, other than the machined look. Anyway, CYL 5 might be the lean canary.

It’s know that with

1) a single plane intake.
2) a big enough cam.
3) a certain level of rpm.

That cylinders 5 and 7 will rob fuel from each other .

A long enough period of light detonation will harm even strong parts, no less those that are being pushed to near there operational limit even with a perfect tune!

Even before a failure the plugs should be very carefully inspected for signs of detonation.

The piston tops should be looked for the same which will show up as pit marks.
If your seeing signs of this and also using race fuel then magnification inspection of the plugs will show the blown off aluminum from the pistons as little purple sliver colored balls on the porcelain on the plugs.

Detonation may first also show up on the big end of the rods.

When all is well the transfer impression of the letters and numbers from the bearing backs will be clear, when the rods are being hammered by enough detonation these transfer impressions will look smudged and unclear.

One of the worst things you can do when reworking the plenum on a single plane intake is to put too much of the radius on the top of any runner leading down from the carb mounting flange, and especially the runners of 5 and 7.

While yes these reworked radius roofs help to flow more are, at a certain point the radius reduces the pressure drop that assist the fuel to make that turn into the runner along with the air!

This is also why using a spacer if you can fit one is a advantage.
The carb spacer if blended in right will allow more
air by means of a better radius, yet the radius can still allow more of the pressure drop to take place to get the fuel into the runner and either have the fuel sheer away, or it can also form a small river going down the runner which is a condition that in and of itself can lead to detonation.

The signs of this type of fuel wash can many times be seen in the burn pattern left in the chambers.

I really can't give you a solid answer to that question. It's been a long time since I checked it and I didn't take notes. I want to say 180ish.
