Dennis,
didn't forget about you. Got my hip replaced last week, so
i have been laid up!

The gauges on the right side were installed by me after the heat was gutted. I found the prism paper in a hobby shop years ago, closest I could come to the engine turned.

I believe the Radio area is stock, the face of the radio came through the opening with no engine turned on any of the ones I've seen.
My current 74 has the engine turned dash, but is put away till spring so I can't check. JOHN

Hi John,

I hope you mend quickly and are out and about in no time.

I'm getting a quote from F&M Metals in Nebraska that specializes in engined turned dashes for cars. I sent them the old dash bezel and your picture of engine turned dash for reference.

If anyone is interested in having them make more than one set just for me, let me know.

Interested. I would want 2 possibly, depending on cost.

Rob B,

You bet. I will post what it costs and maybe be able to get a discount for a multiple order.

Any body else interested?

Default New Carpet Going In

Dan was busy today test fitting and trimming the new black cut pile carpet. It's looking really nice the the carpet was well made (ACC) and molded to all the humps and bumps with more than enough material for trimming off.

Rob B & 74gto,,
I found out that Ames sells the 4 piece engine turned dash inserts for $129.00 and they are in stock, so I pulled the plug on getting them fabricated with a custom metal place. It would be twice the price at least of what Ames sells them for.

Thanks, Dennis

Rob B,
I also have one of those style dashes and the engine turned inserts were in bad shape. Just some info for you guys. You can purchase the material for the inserts in a small roll or sheets and cut them out yourself. I also saw on ebay the set already cut for $50 bucks. I decided to buy the sheets enough to do 2 sets. I just wanted to pass on that info $130 is a bit too much for the inserts. All I have to do now is make a stencil and i'm rocking and rolling all for $19.99. I made my purchase off Amazon...

a95toy,

That's a good idea. How are you going to cut the aluminum sheet without distorting the edges? I'm not a metal worker, so very green at this sort of thing. $50 a set is alot better than $129.00 especially if they are cut well with true edges.

Default metal cutting

I'm making a stencil that will cut exact out of thin metal. Put my machine shop skills from way back to use LOL... I bought the whole roll for 30 bucks if I have any left over I will post to you guys.. I should have more than enough for my two dash's. I saw the ebay one for $50 but i thought i would give it a shot plus if my stencil doesn't work out I may have access to a laser cutter... Let me know if you guys are interested.
I can still purchase more of the material....

Default inserts

Guys,
Sorry i should have been more clear on the $19.99 this is a sheet not a roll but the sheet is large enough to make 2 sets out of. I bought the $29.99 roll. Sorry i wasn't clear with that LOL...

a95toy,

How big is the sheet and what thickness? I assume the whole sheet is already engine turned. I'd be interested in at set. What are you thinking it will cost?

Thanks, Dennis

Default sheet

Dennis,
There are several different sizes I found. There are even 2 types of engine turn patterns.
It really is up to the person who is buying it. I found at least 5 different sizes to the sheets. As far as thickness it was the same as the one i have on my dash. Not sure what the actual thickness is until i get my new digital calipers in I ordered but I can check once the weather co-operates here. I just saw all the ones selling online and the prices and I decided I wasn't going to pay those prices and I figure you guys feel the same.. Once i make the stencil and figure out if it will look right when cut I'll let you guys know. If I have to use the laser cutter that will be the price on what it cost me. If the stencil comes out right on then of course I'll share with you guys if I have any left over and it will be mostly the cost of material. I have just been waiting for the weather to warm up a bit before i start the project...I will keep you guys in the loop. Don't want to see anyone paying those outrageous prices to spiff up the dash. I am still looking for a dash updates for mine so if you guys have any extra gauges or even console parts keep me in mind...

Terry,

That sounds great. I can wait for the inserts whenever you get to it. I do have an extra set of console gauges that I may consider selling/trading. They are very nice originals, but I don'e know if they work since they aren't in the car yet. I may have an extra console too. I'll check and let yoou know.

Maybe Dennis could take some cardboard and make patterns of all four pieces before he applies them to his insert, and mail them to you???

Terry & John,

I've been focusing on getting my '71 Formula ready for paint the past month, so now that is finished (for now) I can go back to the '74 GTO. I bought a new dash insert from Classic Industries and though it looks really nice, we discovered that the cut out for the steering column is cut higher than the original by 3/4". There is quite a gap there now and this affects the engine turned inserts where they curve around either side of the steering column. I'd have to have a custom set made to fit, or at least do some carefull trimming. I could make stencils from the original dash insert and send them to you. Or, better yet, when I get the repop set, send them your way to use as patterns.

Anyone ever install or use the dash insert from Classic?

Dennis
