Default 1955 Pontiac

Excuse my ignorance on older Pontiacs. What model is this 55, Chiefton, Starchief or what?
Also what you think it might be worth. I have limited info at this time but it's very good running/driving, ok paint and very good interior. I'm thinking around $14000 but inexperienced on these.

Should be a Starchief since it's a hardtop. Lots of good info here to find exactly what you have

That's what I thought but the owner called it a Chiefton, I only see Chieftons as sedans but don't know all that much.
What do you think a value range might be with the limited info I gave?
Looked at that website and both Chiefton and Star Chief avail as 2 dr hrdtp.

It is a '55 Star Chief Custom Catalina

This will help explain: http://www.lov2xlr8.no/brochures/pontiac/po55/po55.html

At the $13,500 buy-it-now Ebay price it seems to be fairly priced and it is in your own back yard so no shipping costs to speak of. Don't wait too long!

Nice looking Star Chief Catalina. In those days, "Catalina" was nomenclature for 2-dr hardtop.

Some odd things about it. Star Chief Catalinas came in only two two-tone color combinations and this is not one of them. The ebay ad shows the Fisher Body Data Plate -- Paint No V62 which would be Turquoise Blue and White Mist. Trim No 284 is for Ivory and Dark Blue Leather. The Fisher Body Data Plate is normally painted same color as the cowl it is mounted on. If colors were changed, they sure did a great job of it, including interior.

Price seems quite reasonable from what I can see, especially if the very low mileage is true. But if originality is of concern, I would be skeptical.

Collector Car Market Review
Condition Guidelines
These are condition guidelines to help assess a vehicle's condition. Keep in mind that there are many factors that affect value. For example, a "barn find" may on the surface look like a #4 or #5 vehicle, but it's time capsule character often means it is worth far more than it's condition would normally warrant.

#1 Excellent: A close to perfect original or a very well restored vehicle. Generally a body-off restoration, but a well done body-on restoration that has been extensively detailed may qualify. The vehicle is stunning to look at and any flaws are trivial and not readily apparent. Everything works as new. All equipment is original, NOS, or excellent quality reproductions. Note: cost no object concours restorations should be considered 1+ condition.

#2 Very Good: An extremely presentable vehicle showing minimal wear, or a well restored vehicle. Runs and drives smooth and tight. Needs no mechanical or cosmetic work. All areas (chassis not required) have been fully detailed. Beautiful to look at but clearly below a #1 vehicle.

#3 Good: Presentable inside and out with some signs of wear. Not detailed but very clean. Body should be straight and solid with no apparent rust and absolutely no rust-through anywhere. Shiny, attractive paint but may have evidence of minor fading or checking or other imperfections. Runs and drives well. May need some minor mechanical or cosmetic work but is fully usable and enjoyable as is.

#4 Fair: runs and drives OK but needs work throughout the vehicle. Body shows signs of wear or previous restoration work. Any rust should be minimal and not in any structural areas. Cosmetics, body, and mechanics all need work to some degree.

#5 Poor: In need of complete restoration, but is complete and not a rust bucket beyond repair. May or may not run. Not roadworthy.

Parts or Salvage: Incomplete vehicle most useful for parts. Generally, take 50-60% of the #5 value

It's between a 5 and a 4, call it 4.5
Some rust around windshield trim front and back. I'm not interested, needs total restoration, my gut tells me about $10000 if you want one

That car does not need a total restoration, what you are looking for is a totally restored car.

Well, it didn't sell @$13,500. Last I checked, it was being "watched" by 45 or so people. Can't tell if anyone made a "best offer" bid. It is back up again today.

Hmmm... I had a 55 Starcheif Custom Catalina 2 dr hardtop I bought from original owner(school teacher) 2 tone paint was a coppery bronze and a vanilla white (roof deck lid etc). Leather seats were white with bronze. Had every receipt from 55 to 95 when she last registered it. (52k miles)

My interior was near perfect and exterior stainless was dent free but needed polished in a few spots.Sadly it was a NY car and needed new fenders rockers and lower 1/4's. Chrome was rusting, floors/trunk pan were rusty but no holes. Frame was rusty but not crusty.

I sold mine for $2500 in 2006.(my wife still grumbles about letting that one go)
It was closer to a 4 than a 5 IMO.

This ebay car is a whole bunch nicer.

This is a Star Chief, the Chieftan does not have the stainless behind the rear wheelwell. Star Chief's have a longer wheel base and quarter panel and a "28" om the body tag. Chieftan's have a "25" on the tag
