Identification of 1960 super hydro?
Are there any physical characteristics (wo the bell housing) on a super hydro that would identify it as a 1960 model as opposed to any of the other years? I.e. casting number or whatever.
Thx in advance for any replies. RA |

A 1961-1964 has a full bell housingwhere a 1956-1960 have a 1/2 bell. The 1960 linkage can not be removed unless you remove the pan, where the 56-59 linkage levers can be removed externally. There should also be a tag on the left rear of the case that should read something like P-60 etc.
1956-1959 have a bigger case with 5 pan bolts. A 1960-1964 uses 14 pan bolts. A 1960 transmission is a 1 years only unit.

Thx for the reply. Does this mean you could use the 61-64 hydros with the 1/2 bell of the 60 version?

Tail housing is different and I'm not sure if the output shaft length is the same. You would also need the 60 linkage, flex plate and converter cover.
I have a parts book at work to verify.

SteveP thx for the info. No need to dig any further. I was thinking of buying this trans as a core for parts "just in case ", but think I'll pass on it.

If it is cheap, buy it as the coupling cover cost me $250

Trans was supposedly rebuilt a long time ago and been sitting on a shelf since then. The front coupling or torus (whatever it's called) looks pretty crusty in the picture I received. Asking price is/was $150.

The coupling that I am talking about is behind the bell housing. See if you can buy it for $50.

The coupling for $50 or the whole trans?

Can you determine if the trans is "frozen " by trying to turn the front coupling by hand?

The trans in question was frozen...Until I took it out of park!
