Correct Firing Sequence
Will someone please tell me the correct firing sequence: The image or the numbers on my origional distributor cap? Its on a 400 T/A. Why would they be different? Thanks so much in advance, PB Please see attached photos

plug wire
Guess I wrote my question wrong. Which plug does the origional, shortest plug wire go to?

Still not clear, at least to me...
Are you asking: 1. distributor orientation when installed in engine? I suspect this is your question since the firing order in your images is correct and the numbers on your cap look correct. What is the difference between your images that you're trying to figure out?2. which plug wire goes into which terminal on the distributor? I think you know this, right?3. shortest wire being closest spark plug wire or coil lead or? I'm not sure what you mean by "shortest wire". A picture might clarify4. Something else? |

Plug wires
Thanks for taking the time to help. I have all the origional wires and distributor/cap. The plug wires are different lengths. The shortest plug wire doesn't seem to be long enough without stretching it over the valve cover. It just doesnt seem right and I'm wondering what I did wrong.

It sounds like you need a photo of someone's stock wire routing, a diagram from a repair manual, or even a photo of the wires like this one I found online for a Chevy (not yours !!)
Sorry I don't have any of that so I hope another member can help. Do you have the stock looms? What year engine? That might help others help you. You'll get there.. |

Why would they be different? They aren't.

With #1 cylinder in firing position (valves closed) aim the rotor tip and vacuum advance fitting 90° to the lenght of engine pointing to drivers side fender when installing distributor.
Then with distributor in place you´ll have the rotor pointing to the drivers seat and there´s were the #1 ignition cable should sit. HTH |

Sorry I was late to the party, but here was my wires from my old W72.
The shortest would have been 7 and 5 and 4.
