Dumping canister oil filter for spin on
Hello, I am going to replace my canister oil filter, and replace it with a later model spin on filter. Do I need to change anything or just bolt it on?
The reason I ask is canister pressure spring retainer has 1/4 Dia hole, and later model one does not. Thanks. |

I put the filter mount from a '77 400cid Pontiac V8 on my '57. Worked great. Note that there are 3 types of filter mounts. One mounts the filter straight down and is what I got from the '77. One slants the bottom of the filter slightly towards the oil pan. The third I've never seen. It slants the bottom of the filter towards the rear of the car. All use the same gasket to mount to the block as does your original. I used NAPA Gold 1049 spin-on filters.

Thanks Bill, mine is the straight down version. I will get it bolted on in the morning.

I used one from a 1963 that was pointed straight down on my 1955. That was over 30 years ago and has worked fine. Any one that points down should be fine.

Just what Bill said, Minre went right into place, I used the straight-down version. I am sorry I can't give any other information. I bought mine from a buddy in Az.

Searching the internet now
No problem, I'm searching the internet (the usual suspects). I'm sure I can find one that will work. Cheers!

I am sorry, I did purchase a housing and have it installed. I was not on for a while since it is winter, and the car is outside in the snow. Thank you to all that reached out to me.

Just curious as to why would you change to the newer type of oil filter that filters less (cartridge type has more filter element) and is by far less messy because of a drain plug???

Cartridge vs Spin on
I don't have a shop anymore and I drive my 55' often. I don't always have the time to crawl under it to change the oil. Especially with all of the other issues that crop up. Canister filter is better for sure but changing the oil every 3-4K miles means a lot more money and time spent. I've been in places where they didn't have the canister filter in stock. These old cars are a great hobby for sure and we really try to drive it on most road trips we take. Looking forward to getting out to MD and taking Old National Road to IL in the next month. Cheers
