Once I relash the valves and warm it up I will get video for you .. Thanks GT!.. Just to update this, my car going to the solids is making more power and it is showing it at the track, mph, and ET wise, guessing Harry's test car just did not have enough convertor or gear to take advantage of the switch. My car really is pulling hard when it gets up above 5000-5500

I checked my lash today after work and they were all between .008-.010! I reset them to .005 tight, Question How come when i tighten them up on the feeler gauge and then go to snug up the set screw, they open up some? As soon as i turn that set screw to stop on stud the damn things open up and i can't turn the wrench and the allen together cause then it will be too loose! It was a bitch adjusting them today, Never dealt with this before , and pretty sure that's not normal? Here is a video, car wasn't totally warmed up yet, but it was up to 180 degrees.

Lots of folks think setting valves is just sooo easy.
It is actually. Very easy. The thing they won't mention is that it is also a VERY ACQUIRED feel for doing it also. You must get the hang of the feel of the gauge slipping between what your setting clearance on it must have just a slight drag. Just merely popping the gauge in there and tighteneing down the adjustment nut till it wedges on the gauge aint gonna get it. It must just slightly drag. Best thing I can tell ya is just be very consistent with your method. And two people cannot do this on same engine at same time and do it right trying to help each other either (i.e. one doing the gauge and one running adj nut and locknut). Thats the bad nasty no one wants to tell you about. Just try again and be consistent with your method, take your time and it will come out fine. |

Bob, When I say tight I mean A drag on the feeler gauge, like u are talking about. What I am trying to figure out is why when i went to tighten the screw against the stud that the gap opens back up a little? That's what was frustrating yesterday, setting them is easy

Obviously there is a little clearance between the nut threads and the stud threads and when you run down the adj nut even though its taken up the clearance when you tighten the lok nut it pulls even more and completely takes up all the space possible giving you a .001 or so more than what you wanted.
You'll have to tighten them a hair more than what you need and then once their tight re check the final clearance and thats when you want the gauge to slightly drag through there. Might even have to drop back .001 on the gauge your using so when finally tight they are where you actually want them. It is an art, and an acquired feel, but when done right and all 16 are exactly where they need to be they usually will not change unless something is not right. Probably only need check em once a year after that. Wouldn't hurt to loosen em all up at end of the year when done and release all pressure off em till the following year. Will allow them to NOT get weak on the ones that are fully compressed while sitting. |

They are all very close to one another now, they were pretty loose when i checked them yesterday.. Makes sense why it sounded alot louder, but she sure did make power
