I have a Military mep-002a. Cost me $600. It had 4 hrs on it when I bought it, military gets rid of good stuff all the time. I have only had to use it two times but its nice having power when the neighbors do not. Its diesel but I have a 50gal mobile tank to take from if I need it, it will automatically take from my M35a2 tank until its own take is full.

Generac is the most popular due to them spending more money on advertising...not because they are the best.

Another brand to consider:

Both my daughter and I have one of these. Not as expensive as the auto switch set ups. There are specific instructions on using it. We like it just fine.

The electrician who installed it told me that even though modern homes have 200A main breakers, normally, at any time, a home will be using 30A or less.
The first time I used mine, I forgot about the 4800 watt heater I left on in my garage. So, the 'exceeding 30A' indicator lite was on. No ill effects.

That seems like a great price, and by the looks of your drive it seems you are shopping at the same place for the zombie apocalypse!!

Around 2008 , we had a power failure that was supposed to last for 3 days, I went to Menards a 1/2 mile away and bought one of their last Generators they had , it's a 5700 watt's. I used it several times by back feeding the house from an outside outlet and a cord threw a window for sub-pump. We got by this way but no water due to the well or heat.

A few years back, I had my Fusebox set up to run the generator right into it. Just turn off the main breaker, turn on the breaker for the generator outlet.

Runs the well, heat, fridge and every thing else in the house that way.
Yes you have to be home to hook it up and have gas available, but it works great for me.

I've got a Generac 14K and it's been working great since I had it rewired correctly. The installer cut corners and it had to be redone. Other then that I've had no problems and as a matter of fact it's running right now due to the storms that rolled through last night. It's be going since 2am. The best part is that it's fully automatic and starts within seconds of power loss. I have to do nothing.
