I weighed my low option '73 GTO 4 speed. It was 3700 and change. Not as heavy as some make them out to be. The same car with a 3.42 rear was a 14.90 car. Not exactly low on performance either. Maybe your car could benefit from a good tune..

When I had my Can Am I weighed it Milan Drag way and it weighed 4260 lbs with a full tank of gas. It was loaded with all power options.

Default Weight mystery

Wow, can power options really add 500+ pounds on one of these A-bodies?

It's always been a mystery to me what my 74 Lemans really weighs - some websites say they weigh 3700 or 3800 lbs (only modestly heavier than a 65-72 Lemans) and some say they came from the factory at closer to 4000 lbs (which would slow them down compared to the earlier A-bodies). Seems reasonable that the new 1973 EPA-mandated 5mph bumpers added a few hundred pounds but not a beastly 300 or 400 lbs??

Look at this sample data for 1973-74 Lemans/GTO:

Ultimate GTO website says 4044 lbs
http://ultimategto.com/cgi-bin/stats...1973&f1=weight

BUT many other sites SAY LESS w curb weight closer to earlier models:

3628 lbs.
http://classiccardatabase.com/specs....1974&model=344

Hagerty website says 3552 lbs
https://www.hagerty.com/apps/valuati...pontiac-lemans

3579 lbs

When comparing apples to apples, I'd think a 73 is a little lighter than 74-77 because the 73's were only required to have the 5 mph bumpers in the front, and not in the rears. It wasn't until 74 that they were required to have both front and rear 5 mph bumpers. So, the 73 rear bumpers were somewhat lighter than the others.

5 mph bumpers were heavy, maybe 80 lbs each, per some posts about the '74 GTO.

You have to keep in mind that that it isn't just the bumpers, its also the 2 shock absorbers that each weigh about 8lbs, all the extra mounting hardware, the brackets, the changes to the frame to fit all the parts, the bumper fillers and attaching hardware to make the car look somewhat better. Otherwise the cars would look like some of the AMC products of the era that have the bumpers just jutting out from the body. Just look at pictures of 74-76 AMC's to see what I mean. I can see an extra 200lbs for the 1973 model year, and 300lbs for the 74-77 model years. I don't know how much they had to strengthen the frame to meet the crash standards, of if they had to increase the gauge of metal.
Then you consider that most cars made in 1973 had A/C, power steering, power brakes and the increase in size of the cars themselves, I have no problem with the average 1973 car being 300-400 lbs heavier than the average 1972 car of the same model.

For comparison... I just ran my 73 GTO across the scales at 3,740. Here are the details...

--light weight weld wheels and bias slicks- total weight savings of 100 pounds over steel wheels and big rubber.
--aluminum heads and intake- at least 100 pounds lighter than iron
--Turbo 400
--factory non AC and non console.
--factory manual disk brakes and manual steering

Easy to see where a loaded car is well over 4k. I have had my bumpers off, and that front factory bumper is at least 100 pounds! The rear is maybe closer to 80 pounds.

While this car will pull the front wheels off the ground, I might need wheelie bars if I removed the railroad tie of a bumper!
