Default 65 Tire and Wheel Disc Details

Tires and Tire Valve Extension.

When I purchased my 65 it came with several original items that had been removed at some point stashed in a box. Thankfully the Original owner choose to save this stuff.
Also in the console glove box were two “tire valve extensions”.

After some research I learned this vehicle was to have these 1.09 (1-3/32) #9417730 extensions for the Wire Wheel Disc the car was ordered with.

I recently mounted the proper 7.75 x 14 BFG Silvertown 1’’ white side wall tires with 4 of these extensions (schrader with the metal ball tip). The Wire Disc fit very nice over these extensions just as designed.

I have to say the Reproduction BFG Tires are very close to the Original Spare that’s in the trunk.

First photo is the Repro tire and the second photo is the OEM Spare tire.

Coincidentally I am getting ready to put a set of near NOS wheel covers like this on my '64 convertible. I was doing some research on the valve stem extenders, and I couldn't find any data, but it seemed like for '64 at least the extenders were needed for this cover and the spinner cover. Poverty cap would not need an extender.
I wondered if all wheels/tire were assembled with a standard length valve, then extenders added as needed. I suppose they would have shipped in the trunk with the wheel covers for the dealer to install?

Default 65 Tire and Wheel Disc

My '65 came with Deluxe Wheel Discs. These also use an extension, #9417466, which is 1.59" long. The extensions say "SCHRADER USA" and have the metal tip. The tires are reproduction Firestone Deluxe Champion 7.75-14.

Default Factory Wheel Disc

Todd,
Your GTO with the factory “Deluxe Wheel Disc” looks great!
Thank you for assisting me in locating the extensions I was missing.

Another 65 GTO with the “long” extensions #9417466 as used on this “Custom Wheel Disc” car.

My good friend “Option 382” bought this 1965 New, and it only has 26,311 miles on it.

Without a doubt, one of the very best preserved GTO in existence!

PS, this car still wears its Original Redline Tires. How cool is that!

Chris.

Default 5.871 PLUG, WHEEL

Another factory item used to keep small rocks / debris from entering the backside of the wheels and rattling around behind the full “Wheel Disc”.

These black plastic plugs (20 per car) were to be pushed into the four narrow holes on the steel wheels.
