326 GTO ?
Could someone please post any info and (RPO NO.) on the no cost 326 option for the GTO (I think 67 only or maybe 66/67). Thanks in advance to all.!

Are you talking about the econo GTO?
That was 67-69, they still used the 400. |

67-69 you could get a econo 2bbl auto configuration. But, as 242 said, they still used a 400. I actually saw a 1967 version at a car show in Traverse City, MI years ago.

Mr. DeLorean got the 389 deal done on the 64's. No way he'd let a weinie 326 be install in any the later GTO's, my opinion. When he left Pontiac, there was nobody else with the 'Gnad's to get things done in the proper Pontiac manner (for the most part...)

A friend had a 326 in a GTO back home up in Northern NY.... only because he blew up the 389. 326es were in the 66 Tempest, and LeMans. I had a 66 Tempest Custom HT with a 326, and it was a great running engine. The ST300 with it, not so much.
If I needed an engine in a hurry and a 326 was the only thing I could grab, yeah, I slip it in and run it. But with a Turbo 400 or a 350... but not with the ST300 that came in the automatic 66 GTOs. Better yet a 4 speed Muncie.

The 326 never came in the GTO. Base engine in '64-'66 was the 4 barrel 389, base engine (economy engine) in '67-'69 was the low compression, economy 400 with a 2bbl carb. Again, no 326 ever came from the factory in a GTO. Option 382 (GTO option) mandated a 389 engine. That said, in 1992 I picked up a decent '65 GTO with a 4 speed, 3.23 posi, and a 326.....it ran really hard for what it was. It had a cam and headers, and was a fun car.

Base equipment is stuff that came standard
Nope. In 1967, 335 horsepower with a 'Dearborn' three speed was base. Where it went from there was up to the customer (or dealer). The 255 horse L65 was a no-cost option, and those GTOs were only available with an automatic. The TH400 option cost an additional $226. Two options. Not base.

I had a 326 in my 65 Tempest Custom convertible. The engine was a great motor.
So help me I could not hear it running at a light - with the top down. I bumped the idle up to hear it. There was no tach on those. Great car. I miss it.
