Default 400vs455 stroker

Which is going to make for a faster car. I have a 400 bored .60 over 85cc Kauffman heads, old faithful cam ported and matched at SD Performance. The heads were done up for a 455 but we put them on the 400. Now I found a 455 block and can get it cleaned up at .30 over buy a 467 Butler balanced rotating assembly and bits for $2500. My buddy says it won’t make for a better faster car... what do you think?

Someone once said, several decades ago: there is no substitute for cubic inches.
Still true today.

Yeah, it would not only have more cubes/stroke/torque, But also more compression. Would make lots more hp/torque.

While not a Apple to Apple comparison, I went from a 4" stroke to a 4.050" stroke, and from a .030 overbore to a .060 over bore. Same heads, cam, intake etc. Car picked up 2 tenths in the 1/4.
The 467 Stroker makes a great street/race engine. If you can pick one up for the price makes it a no brainer.

Because smaller journal engines are stronger in the main journal area, wouldn't the best option be to stroke the 400?

Actually, a 3" journal alum aftermarket block might be the "best option", for several reasons.

But, because of price, a 455 MIGHT be the "best option", IF you can find a good 455 block & crank to use, for a reasonable price.

A forged crank stroker assembly, for a 400 block, is over $2000.

So, one would have to compare the cost of a stock crank 455 build vs a forged crank 400 block stroker build. Then, they'd have to decide if they think the 455 would hold up, for the rpm they plan to go. Unless it's some sort of high rpm racing engine, I don't think the larger 455 mains are a problem. And some have posted that the factory 455 crank is good for 500hp or more. We made many hundreds of drag strip passes with my homebuilt cast rod 455 bracket engines. Never had any bearing or other shortblock problems. Shifted at 5000 rpm, with rev limiter set at 5500.

I would just use your 400 block and buy a stroker kit for it. same cubic inches and you dont need a new block.

The 3.25 Mains are not a problem. I run 421/428 blocks with a 4.050 crank to 7200RPM averaging 150 to 200 passes a year. Keep the rods and main clearances in check and there should be no problem.

I just reread the post and looks like he is buying a new stroker kit???
If the engine is not numbers matching, and is a earlier model block I would just stroke the 400 you currently have to 4.250.
