On a more serious note, cavitation would be my concern. Suspect that's what the slots are for. Dunno.

Makes sense. It isn't exactly rocket surgery. But I do like that pickup. $32 at Wal Mart.

A 9/16"ball is going to bounce around more, & wear the ball & the housing. Maybe the engineers were right using a 5/8"ball?

The biggest improvement, by far in this pump is the pickup. And NOT using a Canton pickup. And people have used those for years too with success. They are noted for a temporary drop in oil pressure when you stab the throttle.
This comes from Luhn. And they know more about it than just about anyone.
What would be great is a 150$ Pontiac gerrotor pump. Ford style or Turbo 400 style. Been talked about but have yet to see it.

You're the one babbling and adding nothing of use to this thread. Keep it to yourself.

No one is denying the quality of a Luhn pump. This thread wasn't about who makes the best lump. I bet the Titan pump is pretty bad ass too. But that's not the topic of the thread.

Thing is, if he wants to build a pump close to I thinks its great. I am doing the same thing. In effect, it will be as good as a Luhn. Who do you think the info for that Ford pickup came from ? The guys at Luhn are fantastic. Its like 350$ and if a person whats to go through the effort to make a pump just about as good as a theirs for less than 125$ who is anyone to crack on them. This site is about helping others in our hobby. Let it do what it is here for.
Luhn started out with the same pickup as Scott and I are using. It can be done without major modifications to the housing. But Luhn went to a full 1" tube and that takes machining off part of the pump and making a bolt on block to accept the 1" tube. (gave me that part number too)
If you want to pay for a Luhn pump its fine. If you want to make your own its fine too.
They "check writer" thing gets old. "Just buy that".

Luhn is a great pump, not every build needs a $400.00 dollar oil pump. Plenty of street and race motors do just fine with a stock Melling. If you do a few more tricks to them it can't hurt.

I believe Langer runs a Melling pump. Or used too. Good enough for that guy good enough for just about anyone. NA King.

I'm all in favor of guys doing their own mods and experimenting on a project. That's hot rodding at its finest. Increasing the size of the inlet is always a good idea.

We used an unmodified Melling pump and Valvoline VR-1 10w-30 oil in the Grocery Getter and never had an oil related failure. The single best oiling related thing anybody can do is get away from that 20w-50 goop. Thinner oil has less chance of cavitating the pump and you get more flow to the bearings.

I have seen some very high mileage sbc,s with the pump's idler gear loose and sloppy. Still ran though.
My auto shop teach in high school was a sbc guy and a GMC truck dealer mechanic in the 70s. He showed me the pump and is the one who taught me how to modify them. He was only 6 years older than us kids back then. Buddy's to this day. Still has a Sun distributor machine I put to use now and then.
