I’ve done all I can think of to clean up the grills for the restore project. Using drill attachments for polishing, steel wool (00), 400 grit wet/dry sand paper, WD-40, polishing cloths etc and they are not cleaning up. It has whitish spots on it.

The grills are anodized so I don't think they can be polished without removing it first...

Yes, the anodizing has to be removed before you'll get anywhere with polishing them. If you have an anodizing shop in your area, they should be able to remove it. Basically, it's sort of a reverse plating process. I had it done once for trim pieces on my '66 F-100 pickup and the cost was quite reasonable.

If you want to do it yourself, it can be sanded off but that is a long and tedious procedure. I've heard of people using Easy-Off oven cleaner to remove it but have no personal experience so I can't say how well it works - if you do a google search you may be able to find more information.
