Radiator hose
Is it ok for radiator hose to intake to be higher than radiator? I’m adding a picture of how it sits. Should I leave it or cut the intake side lower?
Thank you!! |

I would say lower it. Going to be difficult to get the air pockets out of that as it is.

Would it really matter if there are air pockets there? It's the outlet ... the water will just push the air out and into the radiator if it needs room for flow. You could probably just push it down while the engine is running and thermostat open and the trapped air would end up in the radiator.
Although, certainly no reason to leave it higher than it needs to be to clear parts. |

Just get yourself a Lisle radiator fill bucket and fill it higher than the hose. Squeeze the hose a heap of times to "massage" the air out before running the car. The air will work its way out no issues.

All you need to do is burp the cooling system.
Fill the system up, remove the cap and idle the motor until the stat opens, when that starts to take place wait until the rad overflows and then slam the cap on and the air is out and your Golden! Then just hose off the nose of the car .

On our stock car we would fill the radiator/block using the top hose removed from the radiator. There was no thermostat but a restrictor on the block. When water came out of the radiator we would quickly install the hose. At times my job was to block the inlet with my hand.

ITSBACK,
Can you post the part number for the upper hose you are using? I have the same setup and no idea what the hose is. I thought maybe: https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/NBG9423

Guys. No need to burp or anything, the bleed hole from the cover to the intake, as well as the cap, it all bleeds when the stat opens. And the hose can be higher, the water will be under pressure.
If you have a heater valve, always make sure you check the level after a heat cycle (valve open/close), and you should be fine. Only drawback when the top hose is higher is that when you're cold filling it, you may not be able to add the amount of coolant that is in that section of hose, which really isn't much. With all that said, I too would shorten it to make it lower, because it looks more 'right', and it won't rub the edge of the alt, possibly causing a hose failure over time. .

Actually that hose is the one I ordered from Ames. It’s a 66 tripower hose. I also added the coil or spring or whatever you call it inside it that you use in the bottom hose to help form it. I had a Tripower on it before and to use it with the dual quad I just trimmed it a little to get it right. Worked out pretty good.

The spring is only needed for the lower hose, which has suction, the spring helps keep it from sucking shut. The upper hose is under pressure, doesn't need the spring.
The hoses are meant to be trimmed to fit, so if you feel to do so, have at it. Just make it lay/route 'relaxed', and with a little slack for engine movement. .

My Camaro top hose would suck in some after running and cooling down. I assume that's what yours is doing?

You don't need a spring on the top hose on a Pontiac. .

The upper hose on my 70 GTO will collapse- I was going to try find a spring to put in it. The car does not have a thermostat currently.

When I say stay right, the shape of the hose just wasn’t good. It didn’t look good and was laying on top of the alternator until I used the spring. At first I thought they sent me the wrong hose. I ordered a smaller spring for the top hose as I think the lower hose is bigger.

Can't see how it would hurt anything. Plus it sounds like it makes it look a lot better.....
