Default Turn Signal Switch Replacement

Trying to replace the turn signal switch on a Floor Shift '68 GTO. Have removed the Deluxe steering wheel and and detached the turn signal mechanism, but have not gone any further yet. The wiring with the curved connector is still in place.
Do I need a special tool to proceed any further? How do I remove the turn signal cover? First time the wheel has ever been off in 52 years.

For 67/68 columns the upper bearing assembly must be removed to replace the signal switch with the connector intact. The screws that you removed to detach the switch also hold the bearing assembly with a lock plate thats behind the upper bearing assembly. Easy to do.

Remove the c clip, flat and wave washer from the shaft.
Push in and turn the bearing assembly CCW. The switch, bearing assembly, lock plate and tension springs (3) should all come off in your lap.

1. When reassembling, mount the TS switch to the bearing assembly with the three screws. On the back side hold the lock plate in position with the springs between the bearing assembly and the lock plate. The lock plate only goes on one way.
2. Tighten the screws 3 complete turns
3. Insert switch harness into the bowl and place upper bearing assembly to the bowl.
4. Push in and turn CW to engage the tabs on the column with the lock plate.
5. Once everything is lined up, evenly tighten the three screws.
6. Replace washers and c clip.

Procedure is in the steering chapter of the service manual.

That is way too much work, once the switch is ready to come out just use a very tiny flat blade screwdriver and release the terminals from the plastic clip. The switch will be removed in less than 5 minutes. For reassembly, just put some masking tape on the terminals and tape them in a flat plane and it easily slides right through. Just bend the little tang back out on the terminals and reinsert into the plastic clip in the correct order and done!
