Default Tightening Power Steering Pump Belt

Hi Guys, I can't figure out how to get leverage on this pump to tighten tension on the belt. I know it has something to do with that ear, but my shop manual does not give any detail.

Do you have a trick to tighten the tension on the belt.

Thanks!

I have not had the original engine (with the original brackets). I believe I used a crescent wrench on the edges of that tab, that sticks upward. Pushing inward yo make tension on the belt, or a long large flat blade screwdriver wedged in between the bracket and snout of the pump casting...
It's not easy, however you go about it...

Ah, power steering is overrated in 4000 lb cars with wide tires so leave the belt off!
Just kiddin of course!

On that bracket on the front of the pump, you see that tab part of it that’s folded over and facing the pump pulls?
Get a pry bar or big Ass screwdriver and a rag.
Slid the bar down along the right side of the Alt leaning it against it with the rag, and then leverage the end of the bar up to that folded tab.

Be ready with a 9/16” box wrench to tighten the 2 adjusting nuts up,

Thank you! So I am using the alternator pulley as my leverage point. So I am pushing on my pry bar to the left over the alt pulley?

That should do it if the brackets are on right.

If your belt squeals after you get it tight, it is the wrong width. See how deep it sits in the pulley compared to the alt? Most parts places sell us the wrong belt, I went thru this a few years ago. The belt you have in the pic is 15495, see if you can find a 17495, it is a little wider.

I use the pry bar between the pump snout and the tab. Super easy. Just slide it in and pull, and tighten the bolts. Been doing it this way for decades. Don't see how prying against the alternator would be the way to go, but that's just me.

You can use the bent tab on the bracket. Even better is to use the square boss on the housing where the input shaft goes in. Use a small pipe wrench. This puts the force in the center. That way it's not twisting and binding as much IMHO.

Also only tighten a power steering pump belt the minimum that you can get away with. The shaft is supported by bushings vs. bearings. Easy to smoke it if it's to tight!

These separate belt systems are what I miss about these old cars!
You snap a Serpentine belt now a days and your dead in the water !

When I put my engine together and in car, I had the same issue. I loosened all the appropriate bolts and moved it by hand to understand where my leverage points were going to be. I don't think I could've figured it out otherwise.
