Default 64 cat exhaust options

In the early stages of planning a new engine for my 64 Catalina 4 speed next year. Probably a budget 428/455 based combo. What options are out there for maninfolds or headers? There doesnt seem to be many so that will play a role in deciding on D port or round port heads. Thanks

I'm not aware of anyone making headers for '61-'64 b bodies anymore but if you use d port heads you could us 425a, '61-'63 super duty, or the later decade big car ho exhaust manifolds. Ram Air Restorations makes the later two new and the 425a versions are out there - I have a set I would sell you for $500.

Rare Long Branchs are a work of art, how could you want anything else.... They make those motors sound so nice too.. You will need the oil filter adaptor but its no big deal...

I'd use 2-1/2" duals into your favorite muffler and out the back. No X or H pipe.. I got the GTO tail pipes to work on my 64 Bonneville but it was tough.. I think they sell the pipes now. For mufflers I liked either Porters or Dynomax 17749 turbos..

A 455 with a 2801 or 068 cam would be perfect for that big stick shift car..

Buy the manifolds and go to your local custom exhaust shop and have mandrel bent 2 1/2 pipes made.

I went with the RARE long branch manifolds as well as their 2.5 exhaust system on our '61. The manifolds are a work of art, but their exhaust system took a little work to get it perfect . I ended up using the 18 inch Goerlich XLerators. The motor is a Len Williams 455 with the 041 cam. The sound is awesome, I get a lot of compliments with it..

Did you use a GTO trans cross member with extra length welded onto both ends?

I have a 64 Catalina and just bought a set of round port headers from the guy at mad dog headers. He is still making them on the side. No fitment issues.

Yes, 3x.250 mild plate from the local ACE hardware. Got the crossmember from Frank's and was able to reuse the rubber frame mounts.

Like b.hill said, although Mad Dog Headers no longer lists Pontiac applications on their website, I would give him a call. His headers, while very nice, come as bare metal only though. He makes both port styles. Factory long branches are a good choice as well, other than heavy and make getting starter in and out a PITA.

Aren't later big car cross members usable? What is the length difference?
