Default Looking for my original block

Hello all,
I’'m trying to track down the previous owner of a 1970 Pontiac GTO. More specifically I'd like to track down or find out what happened to the original engine and 4 speed trans. I bought the car in 2016 and when I got it, it had been painted black (including the rear bumper) but was originally verdoro green with a black interior and a hood tach.
The engine would be a WT code 400 with a date code probably mid to late in 1969 (PHS says the car was shipped on January 13th, 1970 so I'd assume it was built in December of 1969) I believe the casting would be ‪9799914‬ and the VIN on the block will end with 127815

The trans would be a Muncie M20 wide ratio. I was told that the original trans was removed and put into another vehicle, possibly a truck. The GTO then got an automatic trans.

This is a total Hail Mary but I’ve hit a roadblock trying to track down the ownership history of the car. I managed to track it back to around 2012 and know it spent time before that in New Jersey but haven't had any luck going through the New Jersey motor vehicle commission to get the owners history. They won't share any information due to privacy laws. I know it was sold new in Burlington County, New Jersey and was sold sometime around 2009-2012 to a guy in Pennsylvania who was buying it as a gift for his son when he got back from a deployment. That's about as much information as I've been able to gather.

Anyone that can help me out I’d really appreciate it

Default 70 WT Block

I think the 9799914 would be a WS or Ram Air III block, A WT should be 979914. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Best of luck with finding your original block.

Ya I wasn’t 100% sure about the casting number. Thanks for the info

The block I have is a WT with a D100 date code (April 10, 1970) and it has a casting number of 9799914 so I just assumed my original block would have the same casting number.

/\ I do believe that the '914 casting was in production before the start of the 1970 model year, which would have commenced in September 1969.

I have been following this thread because I hold out hope that this is a totally accomplishable task - since the engine was known to exist, and only removed from the car in the past decade or so.

Good luck!!

Also, if you're on facebook, it might be worth joining a couple Pontiac/GTO/Firebird groups as several 1970 model year WT engines have shown up in the past year... I have a hypersensitivity to noticing them, as my car is also a WT car.

Quite likely one of few '70 Muncie three speed Formula 400's left.

My mistake; for a 70 (not 69 as I was thinking) production year, the WT should be 9799914.

Searched here for 127815 but only this thread populated.

Thanks for all the help everyone

I’m not exactly sure when the engine was removed. I’m hoping it was taken out to rebuild or maybe to replace it with something bigger and not because it’d blown up. The trans was removed because one of the previous owners couldn’t drive a manual, or so I believe.

I really wish I could get NJ to give me the owners history, it would make this a whole lot easier
