Question 1973 Chrome Exhaust Extensions

There was an ebay auction last week for an original pair of chrome exhaust extensions from a Grand Am. They were rusted and had several holes and got no bids. I believe these extensions were used only in 1973 as optional on the Pontiac A-Bodies, Standard on GT, GTO and Hurst Olds.

So I thought I had seen reprodcutions available but in looking around I don't see them anywhere. Are these extensions available and if so where?

PY part number PYR73 was discontinued, presumably due to low sales. You could inquire though. They appear to differ from the originals, but look like they can work with any tailpipe.

I just had a set of polished stainless extensions made up at a local shop for my '73 GT from an NOS set I have. The polished stainless looks just as nice as the original chrome and a lot cheaper to do.

Instead of the reducer and carriage bolt on the inlet, I left them 2-1/2" and will have the outlets on my new tailpipes expanded to fit into the 2-1/2" extension. A slight modification of the tailpipe hanger and a standard 2-1/2" muffler clamp should do just as good (or better) of a job as the original slip-fit engineering nightmare.

Anyone had experience cutting polished stainless? I need to cut the 45 Deg angle on the outlet and need to be careful not to overheat the pipe or it will turn blue. I thought about a chop saw with a lot of water for cooling or possibly a band saw. I heard band saws don't like hard steel.

Chop saw with cooling as mentioned would work...just remember two things. Metal prefers the speed of the cutting implement to be slow. The other is don't get agressive with the cutting action...let the implement do the work to prevent heat build up.

Just a followup. I had a local welding shop cut my polished stainless extensions with a good band saw. I finished off the ends with a small file and emery cloth. Turned out real nice with the new stainless exhaust on the GT.

I don't have a close up, but the photo below shows how they look. Next step is some wet sanding and buffing to the paint before I apply the correct GT stripes. This photo was taken with Ray's (BR57) '73 GT at the HMP Pontiac Show in Hamilton, Ontario on June 7th.

Ray, I still owe you the diagrams with the angles and dimensions on the extensions. Will send soon.

I have a photoshop program so I might be able to crop and zoom to get a closer view, but I can verify that they do look very nice.

That is a great picture too!

Ray,
Saw your other pics on
http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=601133

The one rear shot shows the extensions better on my car.

Who was it that had a small batch of reproduction tips made in 2-1/2" stainless...Horst? I'm in the market for two sets...now...can anyone point me in the right direction?

I think it was billygoat73 who was making them to order.

I bought a set of these from Bill about a year and a half ago. Good quality piece and a great reproduction part for these cars. I was very pleased with the entire transaction.

The Kryta boys stole my thunder when they introduced their exhaust systems that included the '73 extensions. I was having them made by a local shop who was matching them to a set of original chrome extensions I have.

I can't compete with their price of $150 due to the low volume, cost of material, and labor I have to put into them. I had to run a minimum of 6 sets to make it even worth the effort.

Has anyone bought these from Inline Tube yet? Any comments?

By Krysta you mean Inline Tube is making them in 2-1/2" stainless?

Brian,

Best I can say from other conversations is that they are 2-1/2". Check out Inline's link below.

http://www.inlinetube.com/Exhaust/73...st/PLX7301.htm

I still have not seen these on or off a car. Maybe someone has already purchased them. I would be interested to see them.

Reading the inlinetube page closely, I only see 2" and 2-1/4" tips being sold there, so it looks like Billygoat still has the exclusive on 2-1/2's .

I think Inline's reference is to the exhaust and tail pipe sizes available. I'm pretty sure their extensions are 2-1/2". Only way to find out is for someone to contact them and get some more info.

Here's all they list for the chrome(really stainless) extensions:

1973 GTO, 73-77 Grand Am Rear Tail Pipe Chrome Extension - 2" Tail Pipe $150
1973 GTO, 73-77 Grand Am Rear Tail Pipe Chrome Extension - 2 1/4" Tail Pipe $150

Maybe they do have extensions that connect to 2-1/2" pipes, but they don't have them listed on this exhaust products page.
