Correct, OPH.

They were trying to minimize the proliferation of engines that would need to be staged line side in the final assembly plant.

I'd have to check, Mike.

It was in the Legend way back, and Smokes somewhat recently (like the last year or so).

Please send me one, Keith. mstaley2@triad.rr.com

This info makes sense since my engine is date coded Oct and Nov 1968 except for the carb which is Dec. 68 and the fan which is Jan 69 as I said.

This probably means that most engines will have earlier date codes for the block, heads, intake, distributor, water pump and exhaust manifolds and later dates for the carb and fan. There will be exceptions of course for a carb or fan that has sat for a while before being bolted to an engine, but this is good info. I just purchased a Nov. water pump so that should work!

Thanks

Default Made In Pontiac

Great bit from part 1:
Eric is getting background info from Carl here.
Were you always into Pontiacs?
When I was a kid in high school I liked Dodges, because '62 Dodges were the Michigan state police cars. They were really starting to get a reputation. I don't remember being aware of any Pontiacs until I was 17 years old. A guy named Joe gave me a ride in his '63 421 Super Duty Catalina. It was the most God-awful thing I ever rode in in my life. We went north out of Clifford toward the powerplant, it was probably a quarter mile flat stretch, and we were well up over 100 miles an hour and stoppin' by the time we got down to the corner, which was a half mile. That thing had a tri-power on it, it was just screamin' and haulin' ass. It was a real car. I never thought about Dodges again after that.

Dad had a similar watershed moment when he was getting ready to leave Ford:

So if you wanted to have a competitive car for 1963 it came down to going to your local Dodge/Plymouth dealer or Pontiac was building and selling Super Duty's...
Not much of a choice according to him. The rest, as they say, is history...
