Default Who is this dude?

While digging up pictures from my old computer, I gathered up some strays.

Does anyone know who the dude wearing the white cape is?

The first guy on the left is my father. This is an Army archive photo, and the reason they gave him the picture was because ‘people didn’t get their pictures taken with this dude.’ My father was weapons designer and instructor, at the Ordinance Development & Training Center, APG, MD. He received a significant award because his team invented a long-range site that could zero-pinpoint heavy artillery shells from 20 miles away. That was big chit in his day, and I remember getting out of school to attend the ceremony. He chuckled about his accomplishment later in life when he saw modern warfare tools in action. He died 11 years ago on 11/11/02, so for a man like him 11/11 was as good as any day to die.

Anyway, the first one who names Dude wins bragging rites. There are two levels because you get extra bragging rites if you can state his full, 20-word name.

We have a winner. Now does anyone know the other 17 words of his name? There was some shift in the word order of his name, but all politicians shift words, especially a dude like him. He was the ‘client’ (the shaw of Iran was also one of his clients) and my father was stickler about dotting i’s and crossing t’s, so I doubt he minced Selassie’s title. Here’s a start:

His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I, Emperor. . . .

Indy: have something that’s a standard-issue to soldiers in the Ethiopian army, and it’s right up there with your avatar; also, I have something, for now, I’ll call a ‘persuader.’ I’ll see if I can get some pictures posted.

Bob gets the bragging rites. Keep in mind that the title is translated from Amharic. Different translators state translated material differently, and the couple of Google searches I did show the variables in translation.

I couldn’t translate. I knew/understood/spoke English, but I was more articulate in Amharic than English, something that would have made my mother’s mother go through the roof, saying “I told you that’s what would happen!”

As a way to ‘get me back to where I belonged,’ my parents bombarded me, now a hard-rock, hair-band guy, with country music to expose me to some type of oral English, other than theirs. (That explains why a youtube music link to “The Three Bells,” by The Browns, can sit beside another link to “Halo,” by Soil.)

Anyway, my father sent this photo to his father just after it was taken. You can detect some level of internal chat by the way he described the focal point; also, notice the stance of the guy shaking his hand. Here’s the inscription on the back:

>The little fellow in the elevator shoes is “His Imperial Majesty, Haile Selassie I, Emperor of Ethiopia, King of Kings, Elect of God and Conquering Lion of Judah.”

Some title!!!<

...I guess it takes all kinds of people to rule the world...

(lol)

So your dad is the gentleman to the left background (in the glasses)? Not the hand shaker?

What year was the photo taken?
