Straight axle GTO out of Chicago early 70's
This 1966 GTO was bought by a guy in my neighborhood in the early 70's - it came from the Chicago area. A girl was supposedly driving it at the time. It had a 396 Chevy with a close ratio 4-speed, Sig Erson cam, Weiand intake, and big tube headers with very large boxy collectors. It had a straight axle with American S200 Daisy wheels all the way around. Beautifully done black lacquer paint with a custom paint job on the rear sail panels that went up over the roof (consisted of blue floating bubbles). You can imagine what it was like being a teenager seeing this street freak flying by your house all the time looking for someone to stomp on. I eventually came to own this GTO when it was all used up (see picture) and brought it back to life a couple times. It was a real handful at both ends of the quarter mile. When new this car was burgundy with a rally dash and reverb. I sold the car many years ago but if anybody here knows the history behind this GTO from the early 70's I'm sure it would be very interesting.

Not taking anything away from the Ram Airs, Judges, 455 HO's, 400 HO's, or early Tripower cars but the fastest GTO's back in the day were always 66-67's. Why? I don't know but they were.

Lets see more 60's styling. Instead of cloning a lemans to look like a stock GTO, how about making it into a 60's style street racer or strait front axel car. Heres one for sale in the Bay Area. Kinda cool seeing something different

This picture shows what it looked like it when I drove it. 427 Chevy with a tunnel ram and L88 gear drive solid lifter cam. It sounded great at 2AM with open headers.
