Default 67 GTO grill insert

Looking for some advice to refurbish my 67 grill, They are original inserts that are dull and have just a few small rust spots. can anybody give me some tips on what and how they brought them back to life. And if you painted them what color is correct. Any ideas are welcome.

Drill out all the rivets. Remove anodizing from outer aluminum frame with EZ-Off oven cleaner. Polish outer aluminum frame then send out to be re-anodized. Clean and polish diamond mesh. Paint all steel brackets black. Rivet back together.

On some, the parking lamp bracket was only painted black on 1 side. I never did figure out why but I've had NOS ones done that way.

Try Autosol metal polish. That stuff is magic and made mine look like new. Does not require any special buffing tools either.

Do you think the grill could be painted?

Anything can be painted as long as the correct adhesion promoter is used.

Chromed grille... hopefully won't require the upkeep of anodized..

You could Mike but you'd have to touch it up on occasion.... and keep touching it up due to crud on the highways wearing off the paint. Paint won't stay stuck on that anodized aluminum for very long.

BTW... I've seen a 67 grill painted black but it didn't look so hot at all. Shiny metal looks much much better.

Is the mesh grill also anodized or just the outer trim?

I'd have to go out in the shop and look but I believe the mesh is stainless.

So to answer your question, yes only the outer rim is anodized.

It's actually rather easy to restore if you use the Easy-Off.

My mistake. You are correct Chief.

Still, I'd try to clean it up and not paint it. Just in case and not saying you will but..... Do Not use Easy Off with them in the car, as it will ruin paint.

Actually, it won't. Unless you want to remove painted pinstripe. EZ Off is the easiest way to remove painted pinstripe.
