Default Custom Oil Pan

Here's the rub... With this custom oil pan, I have no way of knowing how much oil should go in the engine. From what I have been reading, the best way to determine that amount is to fill the pan to the baffle level (keeping track of amount) then add filter capacity and another 1/2 to 1 quart for engine circulation. Does this sound like a reasonable method?

By the way, the baffle welded into this pan is at the same depth as the baffle in the stock Chevy II pan that was used as a donor/template to make this pan.

If it were me and the Stock Dipstick and tube are being used I would measure the "FULL" line of the stick to the bottom flange of block.

Then measure into the pan from the pan flange with the recorded measurement to get the depth the stick goes into the pan.
With that measure, mark the depth of the stick full line into the pan.

Set the pan on a level plain and add water measuring the amount until you reach the reference line.
I would think this will give you the new fluid volume for oil.

I would roughly guess by the pictures of the pan mod you've added no more than 2 qts to the total capacity.

And I'll add that pan looks fantastic!
Cheers

Jeff Beat me to it, that is the procedure I used on the couple of deep sump pans I had made in the past. Seemed to work well, just make sure you pick up tube is spaced correctly to the bottom of the new pan.

I would love to be able to use the original stick and just remark it for full. However, the factory dipstick hits the flat part of the new pan that is well above where the oil level should be. So, I pulled the pan off last night and filled it with water to the middle of the baffle. That took 4 1/2 quarts... I figure (with the longer oil filter that I'm running) total capacity with the filter and what's going to be circulating through the engine that 5 - 5 1/2 quarts should be sufficient. My new problem was how to make sure there's enough oil in the engine at all times without a functioning dipstick... Here's the solution I came up with. This will give me a visual of what's in the pan at all times.

By the way, the pick-up screen is 3/8" from the bottom of the pan with the gasket installed.

That works, Looks like indicators used on aircraft components like CSD's Hydraulic fluid tanks. 5 quarts with the filter is the stock capacity, so you should be fine.
