Cool TIGER THEMED MARKETING

I've been enjoying a post on another site about Pontiac TIGER marketing.
It was pointed out how many of us always associate the Tiger theme as GTO Marketing.

What was pointed out was a 1963 advertisement using Tiger based descriptions to highlight the new engines in the Tempest.

So I joined in with my 2C about personally never thinking it was a GTO thing but an all Pontiac, based on the Tiger bits and references used in several of the OHC 6 ads in my collection. With that I thought I would highlight them here...

Enjoy!

I really liked the Tiger themed marketing but was really disappointed with the goofy cartoon tiger the GTOAA used for their mascot. Eric White was a wonderful artist but I never liked the design.

The 1964 GTO press release package was the best design that very few got to see.

It is interesting to see that Pontiac initially just referred to the hotter version as a "sports package".

In Jeff's ads, only the one from 5/1966 mentions it as the Sprint package.

I guess they came up with the Sprint name a little later in the development process.

Cool SPORTS PACKAGE-SPRINT OPTION

It seems to flip-flop within the Dealer Pricing Guides, Ads, and Dealer Literature.
For clarity It's a Sports package with the Sprint Optioned engine as part of the package.
It's a little baffling as it seems to imply the engine may be offered separate, but it wasn't.

Sports Packages were offered for different models,
the package for the A-Body used a SPRINT OHC 6.

Below is the Performance Brochure (with a Tiger Theme) outlining the Package.
As well as another B&W ad describing the Package.

This is still my favorite factory publication drawing. Nothing says "we own yer butt" like portraying a GTO tiger riding a Mustang!

To further prove that the tiger theme was carried across all of the Pontiac line, not just the GTO, the empty garage with a single incandescent light bulb has always been a favorite of mine. The caption reads "There's a tiger loose in the streets". The piece of advertising is referring to "The 421 makers"/Pontiac.

Thumbs up TIGERAMA

Something recently popped up that I was not aware of.
The 1967 ESSO TIGERAMA PONTIAC FIREBIRD GIVEAWAY.
Seems they gave away several and recently an OHC 6 powered Hardtop surfaced on Craigslist.

Default TIGERAMA

I wasn't able to save all the ad images due to how quickly this Firebird sold but here is another shot.
It was clearly not well-cared for but was running. I just hope the new owner can/wants to save it.

As you may know, we still have ESSO here and they rebooted the whole campaign with the tiger mascot and logo and they were very successful with it. People had tiger tails hanging out of their gas cap doors: they were made to compress to virtually nothing with the little door closed. At the time of the campaign, they highlighted classic cars in their advertising and you would see many classics with them. I'm sure that some of the classics had original ones from the 60's too.
