Default 67 full trunk pan

Has anyone here installed the Ames full trunk pan in their 67 GTO. The one I have is supposed to be for Pontiac but I think it's for 66. There are some significant differences at the rear "step" area under the tailpanel. No way the 67 dropdowns will work without mods where they attach to the rear of the trunk pan. There's also a big difference in the distance from the tailpanel bottom to the trunk pan, especially at the outer corners where they are supposed to meet.

Odd. Ames only lists one part number for the 1-piece full trunk pan for the 66-67, but you could be right that it's really for a '66. I installed their 1-piece trunk pan and dropdowns in my '66, and it didn't require any modification around the dropdowns or tail panel. Just fit right up. Makes me think that your theory that it's a '66 stamping is accurate.

Ze...contacted Ames today and yes they confirmed that for 67 you are supposed to graft the rear "stepped" area from your old trunk floor. If I had that piece left over I probably wouldn't have needed the entire trunk floor. Lots of additional fab work coming my way...what fun.....

Would certainly be nice if they mentioned that in their listing for the trunk pan! Sheesh. I know they do for the dropdowns, but it should be disclosed for the trunk pan, too.

I haven't decided what to do yet. I can probably use the 66 dropdowns as is and not modify the floor. But then I will need to fab up some kind of spacer to attach the bottom of the tailpanel to the rear of the trunk floor(probably at least an inch). I'm pretty sure there aren't any 67 trunk floor "steps" just laying around.

You'd be surprised what some of the folks around this forum have lying around. Post a wanted ad in the classifieds. You might get lucky.

Gassman..that looks to be the 66 trunk pan that is available. I'm assuming your car is a 67 based on your signature "Gassman 67". How did you attach the tailpanel to the rear of the trunk?

I didn't know there was a difference, my was built in '66, so I guess it's OK LOL Here is a pic of the tail panel, it gets spot welded at the bottom to the trunk floor

I know where it gets welded...Did you compare your old trunk pan to the new one in that area? There are significant differences.

I think what he's asking is, and I'm butting in because I'm interested too...Did you have to modify anything in the tailpanel to trunk floor junction to make the '66 pan fit?

No modification required, all pieces are dynacorn, the only mods needed on the trunk pan was the reverse light wiring location holes, gas tank vent and to shorten the legs on the latch bracket

Gassman...Did you use the available 66 dropdowns without mods? The 66 trunk pan is actually a little longer than the 67. The 67 dropdowns have a different shape that rises up with the trunk floor to meet the tail panel. The way mine is mocked up now there is at least an inch of space between the trunk floor and the bottom of the Tempest tail panel. The 66 dropdowns will need to be modified or they will extend past the tail panel and quarter panel a bit. The trunk latch bracket will actually have to be extended down an inch or more to meet the trunk floor unless I bend the trunk floor up to meet the tail panel. If I do that then the gap between the tail panel and trunk floor will go from nothing in the middle to an inch or more at the outside corners. If I bend the corners of the trunk up enough to meet the tail panel then the 66 dropdowns will have to be modified. OK enough for now...sorry for the looong explanation of the trials and tribulations of my restoration project. I hope yours is proceeding well.

Default Trunk pan

The Dynacorn box and drop offs said 66-67, and had to be modified slightly. As for length, of the pan, you are right, a little trim under the tail panel was needed. The whole car was very rusty, so it seems everything that replaced seemed to need a little tweak, the guy doing my car is very methodical, and able to make this stuff work

Gassman...Do you have any close up pics of what your guy did to the dropdowns? I have the 66 dropdowns and I have some cut out 67s for the rear section. The 67 pieces would only work for a 67 trunk pan at the rear corners. The 66 pan is flat at the rear corners so if I just pull the trunk pan up to meet the tail panel I'll need to slice the 66 dropdown to bend it up too and then add in a piece to fill whatever gap is left.

Default drop offs

sorry about this pic, it is the best one. i do remember how the drop offs are different on the original ones, the have a dip, the Dynacorn ones are a bit short. Memory serves my guy had to weld a thin strip on the lower edge to get them to work.
