I think the 3R is 3.625" wide and 1.125" in diameter.

Getting back to pinion depth. I see that the factory rearend and gears are being put back in. So if the depth was correct before, it is going to be correct going back together. Doesn't matter whether its an open, posi, or spool - the centerline of the ring gear will be unchanged and the pinion depth should remain the same.
It would have been nice to have measured the existing backlash, but setting it on the larger spec will probably be close to where it came out. I'd probably go .012" but will be interesting to see what others would do. I figure that if it was quiet when pulled and it has some miles on it, there's more chance of noise if set to a tighter tolerance now.

I'm leaning toward just going with 3RL pinion yoke. Everything I see shows this Nova has a 1310 yoke.
I think I have a drive shaft from a 77 GP. I need to check through the junk pile to see if it has a th350 or th400 yoke. Its cheaper to shorten an existing driveshaft then ordering new. Yes the 1350 is stronger but I won't be putting down the power to justify it. Maybe if I was running a 30 spline eaton. Last edited by rohrt; 05-22-2020 at 05:24 PM. |

Getting nowhere with pinion yokes. The place that advertised the 1330 yoke for the 8.5 still hasn't got back to me. Sounds like it was for later Truck 8.5s and they don't use the same seal. No idea if the seal would fit my housing.
https://threepedals.com/products/cus...d-pinion-seal/ I couldn't find any 3RL driveshafts at home, only a 1330 driveshafts, so I might as well just go with 1350 all the way. Can anyone tell me if this will work for me? https://www.dennysdriveshaft.com/p76...y_and_gm_.html |

I think you are over thinking this. The last 1350 pinion yoke I used on my 8.5 I got off a mid 90's pick up truck(12 bolt), bolted right on my 8.5. Pinion yoke from 8.5 to 12 bolt are interchangeable, same spline, same seal. Sometimes a little difference in the length, but you are shortening the shaft anyway. Strange makes any yoke you need in cast or forged.
