Default Help with turning light issue.

Hello I am new to this forum and need advice with my 67 GTO. (Stumped) When I turn on my parking lights or head lights both turning signal lights on dash come on solid green! When I hit the switch to signal left or right they blink as they should but will stay lit! Car is stock original wireing and has not been altered. Any input on ware to start would help. Thanks in advance

First thing I would do is check and clean all grounds.

Do you have the correct bulbs in there? Should be 1157's I believe. Double filament bulbs. Also as mentioned, make sure the lamp housings them self are grounded.
If they are not grounded you will get feedback and do weird things.

Thank you for the reply yes you are right all 1157 . Brake lights work/ Parking lights work/ Left and Right turn blinker works front and back. But when I turn my running lights on or headlights on both left and right dash signal lights come on solid Green! They will blink when signaling left or right. But will remain lit solid green. When I turn my lights off they go out and work as they should! I never checked ground at the sockets but I will. dont know if the lights would com on if there was a socket ground problem. I am open for sugestions. I disconected the battery for now cant take a chance. No won has altered any thing all wireing still has the factory raped cloth black tape under the dash. I am open for sugestions.

The dash signals come on, do the exterior signal bulbs also come on when turning your lights on?

The dash cluster may be letting light from the dash pod show through the signal lens. Pop out the dash light sockets from back of dash pod except for the turn signal lights. Turn on lights, see if it changes.

All wireing stock, Still has the black cloth tape on the dash! I hate to start ripping things apart going blind! Need a direction to start! I will try to attach a photo of my son and the car. He just got back from a 1 year deployment in Irac and has never drove it I figured it would cheer him up. Any help on this would be great.

Yes they are on that is what we use to call the Parking Lights! BUT I have not looked to see if they go out when I turn on the head lights! Will check and let you know. Boy thank you. I rather go step by step with you all one thing at a time. Than just taring things apart.

Two things I would search for, one there should be a 3 wire loom that exits out of each of the front turn signal lamps. Two of those wires are 12 volt power + wires, one is to turn on the marker lights and the other is 12 volts + to turn the TS blinker light(s) on. The last wire (one per each housing) is a ground wire. I would check those sockets as well as the ground wire on both sides. The ground wire runs over to the core support. On 66 and 67 GTOs it is very common for those turn signal housings to rust and fall apart from the inside out. Often one or both of those housings need replaced due to rust in the socket where the bulb plugs in. (Those TS housings will hold water when the gasket for the lens leaks.)

After that you need to check the ground wire underneath the dash, that wire is a black wire & it is attached to the back of the gauge housing.

The end of the ground wire looks like this:

Here is a pic of the ground wire from the 2 bulbs which light up your green turn signal arrows. If that ground is OK. Next you need to check the ground strap/brace at the back of the gauge housing. It's right beside where the speedometer cable attaches to the back of the speedometer.

I can post a photo of the ground bracket if you need me to.

Could be just what Peter is talking about in those front turn signal sockets. You could test that by just running a jumper wire from ground to the bulb housing body on each side.

Rather than spend $90 a piece for those reproductions, I took the ground wire and soldered it to the housing and covered it with shrink wrap.

Didn't think of this before, do the signal lights in dash dim when you turn dimmer on headlight switch? May be simple but try it,

Yes parking/signal lights come on when when I pull the light switch once and go out when I pull the detent switch all the way out! Green dash turning lights stay on all through the above until I push the light switch in.

The same scenario caused by the bad grounds up front could also be caused by the rear bulb sockets. Four more places to look for a bad ground to each socket.

Front parking lights going OFF with headlights ON is factory. Turn indicators ON with headlights ON (no front parking lights) pretty much rules out a feed back problem caused by a bad ground up front.

This would have me in the back looking for a problem. Bad ground would be first on the list then bogus sockets or bulb/s not grounding good in the socket/s.

Rear bulbs will light up with a bad ground. Current gets divided up through other bulb filaments. Lower watt bulbs, like turn indicators, can light up from this power hunting ground.
