What would YOU do?

I called and they quoted me $302.00 to recore my 67 GTO Auto Radiator (original).... Hmm..

Thinking I might go Aluminum and store my orig. It's not leaking... and I don't overheat.. Just interested in preventative long term maint...Before I have too.(for once)

Have the radiator checked out before assuming it needs a recore.

I paid $200 CA to have my 3 core rad recored with a 4 core. Works well. I believe I have a Harrison Rad? Anyways the place that did it manufactures cores. 1 of the fellows there mentioned that they were looking at going to a new type of copper/brass core that would cool better than aluminum. He mentioned it would be a 1 or 2 row core with large tubes and it was supposed to be the cutting edge. I haven't been back since so I don't know if they ever retooled for them or if it was just a passing fancy.

I would go with aluminum, you can go with a summit brand for under $200 and the two one inch rows cools better than 4 row brass. Thing is you have to fabricate it to fit, not that hard.

I got a new radiator for my wife's '69 from Pep Boys of all places, and it was $130. Perfect match to the old one and perfect fit. On top of that, when I damaged the radiator 3 years after the install and it started to leak, they replaced it - NO CHARGE!

I just got a new one for my '71 too, about 6 months ago. 4 row, A/T, $139. Can't beat that.

I agree with PMDRacer's opinion. Get a $140 rad. Spend another $100 on a supplemental electrical fan if money is burning a hole in your pocket. Fill up the car, spend the rest taking your Girl/Wife/Whatever out for dinner in said car. Everybody's happy.

unless you're planning on serious perf mods in the near future i agree with pmdracer and 78ghost.

buy a good repro and put the savings elsewhere.

Summit has universal fit aluminum radiators for $180.00 If you look hard enough, you can find Griffin for the same price. I had a custom made and sized, 5 core 17 fin per inch copper/brass radiator ($300) in front of a 600 HP 455 and it ran at 210-220 all the time. Not to mention heavy as hell!

I installed a Griffin 26" x 19" and it wont run over 160 F. You just need to fab your own brackets which will take all of a ½ hr. If you want to look stock, paint it black.

vidguy,
I live about two blocks from your shop! (near Valley and Santa Rita) I hope you have a welding shop cuz I am close to installing some upper shock supports for my new air ride suspension. I might have seen your GTO around. You have not seen my Bonneville unless you lifted the tarp, to see it on blocks, in my driveway! (We'll have to take your ride if we get a burger anytime soon) Maybe you can help me put this beast back together. I sure don't know what the hell I am doing and the wife and kid are no help...... I will send you an email soon.

Tax return is here and the pressure is on!
