It it normal for my 400 to run on slightly when shut off .Is it due to running only 87 octane.it was very hot today probably around 85 to 90 degrees. Should I up it to 89..think I am running around 12 degrees initial timing..or do I need 91..These cars are only around 8 to 1 max compression I think. The engine was rebuilt so not sure whats up..haven't really heard any pinging though just the run on for a few seconds.I also have edelbrock carb..didn't the q jet have some antidieseling solenoid or something..

80TA,pontiac 400,edelbrock carb,accel wires,dual exhaust,dynomax mufflers,no cats.
CE subframe connectors.

99TAWS6 ..lots of mods.

Try a higher octane fuel.

I daily drive my 78 T/A with 400. I use 87 octane camel piss and have no problems.

I agree with Bob's advice, except the fact that my car (virtually stock) likes a lot of initial advance and it's easy to have the idle set too high. Mine idles right around 500 RPMs in gear and I don't have any dieseling problems even in the warm Houston climate.
