Ok in looking at 78 and 79 cars that are supposed to be original I have seen two different timing covers. The flat one that has the plastic scale bolted to it. That is on my 78 original motor and an X7 TA motor I picked up as well as in the shop manual.
The other I have seen is the cast scale like the ones that are on all the new replacement covers. Did this also come out on motors in 78 and 79?

Yes, they came both ways. Have noted this on over a dozen '78 & 79's with rel low mile 400 engines.
