I lately ran my car and manally shifted it at 5000 to 5500 no problem it seemed it would easily rev to 6000.Its a 400 rebuilt but I don't really know anything about the motor. It seems decently strong.I got a 15.1 at 96mph with a 2.47 60ft actually three runs all super close to same .I have 3.08 gears and am at 1900 feet above sealevel. Was talking to buddy at speed shop and he thinks the pontiac 400 stock woudn't rev anywhere near that high..is he right..car might have slight lope but not that bad.idles pretty smooth but hear you can have a pretty good cam in these cars and still have smooth idle.

Tach might be off what size tires are you running and what gear did you cross the line in. That info will help figure RPM.

Tires are factory snowflake 15 by 8 with proper factory size rubber..225 whatever they are ..just street tires..I timed the car with tazzo vpc..very similar to g tech but gives mph same as track unlike g gtech which read quite a bit higher..yeah I know the car is actually going the gtech speed but still.
Anyway think tach is accurate..have to double check it with my digital timing light..nice toy.
I know my speedo is not working right..not sure whats up with that..seems to be reading faster than am actually going.Car has 3.08 but planning on some 3.42's shortly and will try to fix speedo to be accurate.I am mostly just curious about the 400.I am going to be going small block and 6.71 shortly anyway but my 400 is a torquey thing.

If the bottom end is built then I'm sure it would be ok to 6000 RPM like you said, But if you don't know what type of rods etc. you have I wouldn't push it over 5500 RPM without being 100% sure. It may have a cam, but the bottom end is what I'm worried about. Pushing a Pontiac with stock rods/bolts to over 5500 RPM is just asking for trouble.(like a rod through the block ). Just my 2 cents.

Ok hear you on that..doubt the rods are great but you never know.I will keep it under 5500 ..don't want to blow it up so I can't sell it.Might have to drive the 400 for at least this year.

The factory redline on my 455 H.O. is 5750 RPM. Your 400 should have no problem at 5500 RPM.
