I just put in 3.42 US strange gears the other day.Very happy with the bump in performance especially around town but of course my speedo is way high.It was way high before with the 3.08..think the former owner swapped in 3.08 from something in the 2's maybe.Anyway here was the idea..called gm and found out the gear in tranny for 80 camaro with 3.42 and turbo 350..it was 44 tooth..I have stock height tires right now. I think I may need that sleeve with proper numbers on it but gm has that too..so will that work..I hope the camaro and firebirds are similar enough not sure if your speedos are different from the camaros..the firebirds never had 3.42 I don't think with turbo 350s did they.??Anyone else fix their speedo with 3.42 and remember what they used..???

Get the gear for the Camaro application and install it in your th350. They're all the same.

Thanks Brian..already have the gear just got to throw it in but might need the proper sleeve it installs into..will find out in next few days.

If you are changing the tire height by running different tires than what came on the car from factory, you must factor that in or your speedo will still be off. You need to know the tire diameter you will be running and the teeth of the DRIVE gear on the output shaft(easily changed by removing the 4 bolts holding the tailshaft to tranny case).
Once you have this info, you can plug it into TCI's handy calculator and get the proper gear. If you scroll the page down a bit, you can see they only used a few different drive and driven gears. You can try each drive gear to try to output as closely as possible the exact driven gear you need. Then you can buy both the drive and driven gears to make your speedo dead on. (They all will be off slightly, but the closer to the exact driven gear, the better.) |

I switched from a 2.73 to a 3.42 and had to change both gears, GM had all the gears on a printable list at one point but not sure about that anymore. I calculated the new gears by finding the ratio of the new and old gearset, then finding the correct ratio of the new speedo gear set. Hard to explain but it works, you need the list of available gears and he old/new rear ratio to do it this way. Probably there is an easier way but I didn't find it then.

I remember an old article that said for every 5mph at 50mph change 1 tooth.

Well used that table mckyee and from what it said for my current tires needed a 43 tooth driven and a 17 drive..I have a 19 drive and got a 44 driven so still
my speedo is still whacked.Not sure why guess the camaro has a different height tire than my ws6 stock.
