Since it has been so long, the car may have been "dumped" from the system, but I'll see what I can come up with on Monday. If you don't hear back from me by Tuesday, PM me because I might forget.

A few of questions:
Was the title transfered to you when you bought it?
Do you know who it was titled to?
Where did the car come from? City? County?

Basically you will need to apply for a lost title. If the title was transfered to you & you only lost it, this will not be a problem.
If you were not given a title when you bought the car, things are a little more difficult. You (or your agent) will have to apply for a title. A certified letter must be sent to the last registered owner asking them to sign the title over. IF you are very, very, very lucky, they will actually be at the same address and sign the paper work.
Since this is a rare occurence, you will have to petition the courts to re-assign the title to you. This process requires you to gather as much evidence as possible to show that you have made every possible/reasonable attempt to contact the previous owner. There may be other/different things you will have to do, but once completed, as long as there is no one contesting the transfer, the courts should re-assign the title to you.

I just checked that VIN and got a response of "NO RECORD FOUND."
This means that A) that isn't the correct VIN, or B) it's been deleted from the active files.
I'll be able to look into it further on Monday.

could it also be a situation in which the car never had a title?

i know in some states pre 1970 cars were sold with a bill of sale.

Older VIN's are not the same length as the newer cars have and dont show up on carfax.
