Unhappy Daddy

Daddy`s been in the nursing home for the last 6 yrs. with dementia following a routine gallbladder surgery. A man when he went in to surgery and not when he came out.

We brought him to his house after 6 years last Wednesday. We sat at his table last Thursday for a meal. He has not done that for at least 6 yrs. For me, 20 yrs. plus.

Last meal at the table. Quit eating 2 days later. He passed in his room yesterday.

I`m so glad we got him out of the nursing home when we did. We bathed him and combed his hair, cut some clothes in half do dress him. They came to the house to pronounce and the funeral home came by to pick him up.

His birthday is coming up. We will have a service the day before.

My condolences to you and yours.

I'm sure that being at home for his final days meant the world to him.

Some hope to all you cancer patients. His primary care giver is a stage 4 colon/liver cancer patient. She says, "I have cancer, cancer does not have me". She also says, "I will live till I die".

That`s his wife/ my mom.

My condolences to you and your family.

Lost my dad 2 weeks ago tomorrow.

You have a difficult couple of days coming up, but it gets better. Remind yourself he is in a better place.

So sorry to hear this Wade - but a great thing you did for him by bringing him home. Your Mom has great strength - take care of her too!

I'm sorry for your loss.

Your father's situation is similar to my father's experience. He went under anesthesia three times in about a ten day period, and he emerged in a fog. I'm starting to hear of more and more examples of anesthesia triggering dementia in the elderly.

I agree. We had him checked out many times. Perfect, they said. No, he ain`t. He did have around 3 surgeries in a year or two. Can`t remember now. He always bounced back.
Not this time. We came to the conclusion that his brain couldn`t handle being "put down" that many times at his age.

I am very sorry to hear this.

As far as mental decline goes--I have seen a few older people that mentally declined when there was a physically demanding trigger--whether it was a bad fall or broken bone or an operation, etc. I assume that when it is coming down the road, something stressful can bring it quicker. That's just my guess.

Again, I hate to hear about your Dad. It is hard to lose a parent.

Michael

My condolences Wade to you and the family.

A nursing home is the worst place I've ever seen any one put into. It's the beginning of then end for them. Worst care I've ever seen someone get. Happened to my grandmother, my mom, and a couple of aunts and a uncle. No one should ever be put into one. Best thing you did was bring him home.

I know. I hated that place. His teeth started to fall out due to lack of care. Clothes missing, people in his room, etc.
But, mom couldn`t battle cancer and him at the same time so, that was done. We didn`t think she would make it. We never told him about the cancer. He would have freaked out.

Be proud of your parents strength and let it be an example. I'm sure this isn't easy for you. You and your family is in my prayers.

I was there every day. He knew who I was until the last day and a half. That`s when I knew it was near.

Never been through the real deal before. Always after the fact, at a wake or so with the make up, mouth sewed shut, etc. And never at the crossing over. I`ll never forget it.
