Robert, et al, do you have any un-attached clips that you can upload a pic or two of?

Here is the email I received from tazimmy. Ill try contacting him after Dec 5. I'll probably end up doing what Poison Heart did.
"NOT an easy way. Possible take a little of the barb off or open the slots a little. YES I do have a few more. I'm out of the country at this time until dec 5. Can be of more help after this date. Thanks Todd Zimmermann" |

The barbs will break off as soon as the clip goes into the hole so I don't think you really need to worry about that as long as your tack weld them in place.
Buy them from Fusicks. They're a little cheaper and definitely the same clips

Interesting info...sounds like a major IN-compatibility here...FYI, I have used and reused the same set of factory clips in about 4 diff sets of wheels over the last 15 years and never had to alter the wheels, the clips or anything.

Factory clips must be better than these aftermarket ones

...maybe, or perhaps just a different shape for a different application.

You might try heating one of the clips with a propane torch and then letting it cool before installing to see if this does not relieve some of the stress in the metal. I have watched a number of different processes that do this. It might make them so they were less likely to break. It sounds like you have nothing to lose. It could be that this was a key step that was never done in the repops. Try doing it to just the end that goes into the rim. Obviously the whole thing will heat some but...
From what I have seen this will relieve some of the tension that makes the metal brittle. Some items they do it only to 400* and others 800-1000.

Here is a clip from Fusicks which someone on here said TAZIMMY claims that his are higher quality. I call BS on that. They appear to be the same exact clips. And since he sells them for a little bit more I'm betting he can make about $12 on each set he sells.

I will see if I can find an OEM clip and post it today...PH, the one you show seems to lack the little retaining barb.

Yep, those barbs break off instantly on both TA clips and Fusicks clips. Thats why I tack welded them on

8LUG....I received another email from Todd. No advice other than to try and open the slots on the wheels more. I'm not sure that will work well. It doesn't take much to break the barbs off they are brittle. I'm going to try opening the slot slightly on my spare and if it doesnt work I will just tack weld em

Forgot the damn barbs, tack weld the damn things on there.
Opening up the slots isn't going to help. You said yourself how brittle they are.

Yikes! I would NOT modify the wheels, be it opening the slot OR welding on them!

Most of us aren't lucky enough to have original wheels with the factory clips. There is nothing wrong with welding them on. I have no balance issues if that's what you're worried about. And it's not like I laid down a huge bead with a stick welder and warped the wheel haha

WEll its been awhile but I tried what Deadhead suggested and heated the barbs on the clips up with a propane torch. (Was able to get them red) I then was able to bend them in a little. It worked!!! I was able to mount the clips. Also I was able to squeeze the clips together a little so they would fit in the slot better.

Should change the properties of the metal and make it so they are less likely to snap off. Not an engineer, but I have seen this done with industrial applications to relieve internal tension in the metal.
