An update: Repaired all dash wiring, found that ignition switch was bad. Rebuilt carburetor, replaced fuel pump, and primed oil pump. I filled the carburetor bowl and it started immediately. I took it on it's first real drive in at least 15 years. Couldn't be happier!

Now I am trying to locate a correct factory radio. On the build sheet box 98 reads RADIO ----. The code for it is UN9 RADIO SUPR. G. Does anyone know which radio came factory? AM? AM/FM, OR THE RED DOT STEREO? HELP

if there is a blank in the radio box, I'd suspect it was a car with no radio;
I have spoken to a couple guys who ordered their cars around that time with no radio - apparently like them, most were pissed when they received their car intending to add their own aftermarket radio, and they noticed the car came with a windshield with no built in antenna!
I believe there was an option to have the car built for a radio, but without a radio option...
It might be worth sending away to PHS for a packet on your car, as that should spell out precisely which radio (if any) it came with.

I'm just a little confused, because you seemed to suggest before that it had no build sheet, but had PHS, while your last post seems to suggest you have a build sheet.

This is what I have. It's a copy of what I was told was a build sheet. I believe it's just a copy of an old PHS documentation that the other owner had.

That's a build sheet.
If the details in the top right corner match your vin, then that's possibly better than what PHS can give you.
I have heard though that depending on where along the line that build sheet was used, it may be missing information that you're looking for.
I would guess, without knowing cars from that year as well as mine, that this was the option code for having all the provisions for a radio in place, even though it would have had no radio in place;
Cars without a radio had a plastic block off plate installed.
There is a reproduction available, but it's a 1978-1981 radio block off, so it's a bit bigger than the radio opening for a 1970-1977 Firebird.

EDIT:

BINGO!!

yup.
The RPO 'UN9' would have included 'U76' which is essentially a windshield with an antenna lead... early on in the second gen run, GM more or less tuck it to cheap buyers if they didn't order a radio by putting in a plain windshield, and making the owner of hte new car either order a really expensive replacement windshield with the built in antenna, or cut their car to mount an aerial.

I would say the original buyer was planning on adding his own (high power) radio/tape setup. So why pay for a radio?

Just needed the hookups, because he planned to take the original radio out when he got it.
Was a popular thing back then.

I would like to thank you all for sharing your experience with these cars. This past Saturday I took it on it's first drive outside of my neighborhood. I never got on it, just testing the waters. I will say that the bottom end torque of this car is amazing.

Thank you, waiting on nice weather for some more test drives. I plan on going through the cooling system. The original radiator is there and needs to be recored. I would like to have the water pump rebuilt, I can't find a kit though. Member frankyboy455 sold me a 1976 Delco am/fm radio this morning. I am also going to remove the factory Walker exhaust from my other 76 and install on this one along with factory manifolds. It's all in time.

Getting a little off track, but in 1975 I went in to order a new 76 Trans Am at Thomas Pontiac in Daphne Alabama as soon as they started taking 76 orders. I wanted a Starlite Black TA and was told that black was not available. So I ordered a Firethorn Red with black interior 400 auto. Two months later Starlite Black paint was available and was I pissed. I have some AMA papers somewhere in the garage from that time period that states all of this. Early 76 colors that I remember were Cameo White, Sterling Silver, Goldenrod Yellow, Carousel Red and Firethorn Red. I don't remember a blue on a TA, but I do remember black was a late addition to the colors for 76 because I could not order it and they refused a special order. Some pics of the Firethorn I was forced to order with a rare silver bird, most were gold. Another of the black one I bought later.

That TA is long gone. The girl is still with me, almost for fifty years now.
Have this TA now.

Your memory is spot on! Black wasn't announced until late October 1975 and it didn't reach production until mid-to-late November 1975. And "gold' decals weren't available until black was introduced. My dad had an early Firethorn Red T/A much like yours and his was equipped with the silver/red/black decals.

You mentioned the documents above. If you ever found them, I'd love to see them.
