1966 Protect-O-Plate help needed
Does anyone know if the POP for a 66 GTO identifies the transmission and axle? The vin and engine codes are easy but the other codes don’t help. I have the PHS but don’t know how to tell between a 3.90 and 4.33.
POP info below 223 AA Full VIN EUN WV8 3 S Q FT 6 Indian Head Stamp Any help is appreciated Last edited by DANTIP; 01-20-2021 at 02:48 PM. |

Black WV

Poverty caps/steel wheels, No console, standard seat belts, i'm guessing the original owner would have opted for Ram Air but it was not available in CA in '66. The car has had the same set of mag wheels on it since at least 1974. It is a low-mile, never wrecked, never rusted all original panel car that was treated to a nut and bolt professional restoration. Interior has original upholstery. I'm super excited! I attached a few photos of my very original black WV along side this car from a few years ago. I am in the process of readying the smog equipment to go back onto the 4.33 car. |

Steve and I met at a small car show in New Haven, Indiana a few years ago. I had taken my very original black '66 California WV tri power car to the show with a brother-in-law. You can imagine my surprise when I discovered the only other vintage GTO at the show happened to be another black '66 California WV tri power car! Steve's car was beautifully restored but did not have the smog parts on it. The engine was dressed like a WS. Steve showed me the documentation he had in a binder and the history of the car including some drag-race years. Steve's brother was living in SoCal at the time and Steve was looking for a black '66 to replace one he had bought new. This car was found and Steve made a deal on it. He somehow talked his brother and his 2 nephews into driving the car to Indiana (2,000 miles). Can you imagine driving the GTO from SoCal to NE Indiana with 4.33 rear gears?? Steve and his wife enjoyed the car for decades before deciding to have it restored. Steve's wife told me a story of driving the car on a "Girls Night Out" with a few friends and accepting an offer to race the car against some guy that assumed he would win. He didn't win. Steve had the car restored over a 3-year period and photo-documented the process beautifully. The car has all original never damaged sheet metal and rust/pit free frame and parts. The fit and finish on the car looks exceptional to me. The doors open and close super nice, the windows look like they fit and seal well. Steve has been meticulous in his record/document keeping, parts keeping and overall care of the car. Steve had accumulated some excellent "upgrade" parts like wood steering wheel, console, rally gauges, power brakes, etc. but chose to keep the car as close to original as possible. I plan to carefully finish and install the correct smog equipment and show this car along side the other black '66. I'd love to know how many of the 1,500 CA tri power 4-speed cars were black. My guess is 100 or fewer. It's just amazing that 2 of these cars ended up at the same small town show 2,000 miles away and 50+ years later. Last edited by DANTIP; 01-21-2021 at 11:07 AM. |

Congrats, Dan... what an incredible find and great story! Having two black/black WV cars is truly amazing. Hope to see some more photos when you get a chance. Those wheels look like same vintage Torq Thrusts that were on my '67 when I bought it... are they 14"x6" or 14"x 7"?

Dan.... pretty sure FT is the code for Close Ratio 4-speed.
FO would be Wide Ratio. Grant |

66 Ram Air
The 66 Ram Air engine was not California smog compliant, therefore was unavailable for sale. In ‘67, Pontiac did offer a CA smog compliant Ram Air for engine.

POP
I'm struggling to find much on 1966 Pontiac Protect-o-plates but I may have solved one of the mysteries. The "Q" code shown as a mystery character could be a Fremont production month code. I've found 2 sources that say "Q" was the production code used at Fremont for November production vehicles. The character is at the end of line 2 of the factory POP information. This is the same location used to show production month for other GM cars leaving Fremont. Can anyone refute or corroborate this? Another reply to this thread thought the Close-Ratio transmission was the "FT" code shown. Can anyone corroborate this?? Thx for any help!
