Default Who’s Still Working?

We’re still under lock down here in Ohio but some businesses were allowed to open on 5/1. I work for a machine/fab shop that services the steel/aluminum industry and so far I’ve worked everyday through this thing although business is slow and customers have put capital spending projects on hold. It’s not 2008-2009 slow but it’s close.

I keep hearing in June the floodgates will swing open but we’ll have to wait and see. Ford is supposed to resume production this week and GM the 2nd week of May. Automotive is about 30% of steel consumption. Stainless production is still fairly strong. Seamless pipe used in drilling makes up a good share of steel consumption and with the oversupply of oil that segment is pretty much shutdown.

It is eerie driving to work on empty roads early in the morning.

I haven't missed a day either and my work is in line with yours.
We get questioners and scanned before daily before entering, mask all day and CDC separation

I have a couple friends that work in your exact field. They worked through the whole thing. I used to work there but left in 1999. I learned so much there, how to weld, how to fab with tools you never thought you could form steel with, and a ton about electric. Its pretty much a carbon copy of what you said work wise. I am now in the HVAC field and had off for a month. I went back the 23rd of April to get ahead a bit. Everyone else comes back Monday.

Wife and I both work for big aerospace so we are part of the DoD "critical infrastructure". No change for either of us except for less traffic on the commute.

I do feel for those who are struggling though.

Massive extra hours here. March is usually our biggest month, this one was very heavy. Other vendors in the vintage field note the same.

The company I work for supplies product for the medical (COVID-19 testing machines), aerospace and government contracts, so we're essential workers. In fact, a lot of MN workers work in the construction and medical fields so traffic really didn't slow down at the times I go to work. Now I have to start earlier as we're being temp. scanned before entering the property. Work in a room alone for the most part and have to wear a mask and wipe down the area before I start work everyday. Gloves are asked to be worn as well as frequent hand washing/sanitizing.

You get to be pretty well rounded in a place like this. This is the 2nd shop in this industry i’ve been at and in 15+ years on the floor worked on some of the dirtiest nastiest jobs that would make Mike Rowe puke on up. Working in the office now pushing paper and managing projects. They’ve put us in separate rooms so we don’t have to wear masks all day unless we’re on the floor to check something out but still have to do the temperature questionnaire thing every morning and try to keep your distance.

Remember a few months ago when all we had to think about was the trade war? Good times.

Have worked from home for 35 years, no change.

Busier than ever (maybe just slower )

Lots of folks working on their vehicles, and needing carburetor parts.

Construction hasn't skipped a beat here on the shore, no change at all for me personally. Lots of people nearby in service industries (bar, restaurant, hotel, etc) are doing nothing.

I haven’t missed a day other than my 2 week quarantine in April , which was awesome btw . I’m an engineer with CSXT railroad out of Cincinnati . The railroad wouldn’t care if ya came in with a 104 temp and vomit all over your clothes , just as long as they can make a departure time and keep train velocity up . As far as covid prevention - CSX finally started issuing squirt bottles with a bleach solution and we have paper towels lol .

Been off for a month. Got the call Friday to come back. Driver for an RV parts manufacturer and supplier. All the RV plants shut down for a month, some are restarting Monday.

I haven't quit working either, though I had my employees take a couple of weeks off. I've seen a noticeable increase in requests for our services (restorations).

Work an Auto parts counter. Nothing changed except we close an hour earlier and to wear masks and gloves all day. The amount of jerks and shop lifters seem to have gone way up.

Auto parts biz here. Been super busy. Between the farmers getting in the fields and all the guys off work right now, our business has been booming! (Knock on wood).

I'm a design engineer for commercial and industrial UPSs and power distribution systems. We build the equipment that powers server farms, the military, hospitals, and airports. I've been working from home for at least six weeks, but I've been busier than normal. My company utilizes a staff of engineers in India to handle some of the engineering tasks. They have been sent home due to Covid-19, but they don't have laptops so they can't work from home. As a cost-cutting measure, we're being required to take one week off without pay. I just wrapped that week up today.

Still working (from home), although threats of involuntary furloughs keep coming up.

Side-stepped the first round...hoping there won't be any more.

Mike has been home 6 weeks. He is in Industrial Construction, and demolition he goes back May 11 th. Only reason he was laid off is because his crew was working at two Schools and since they were closed and remain closed, they couldn’t be on the property.
