Freshening up my grill
I am going to remove my grill assembly to freshen up my grill on my 66 2+2, Looking for some advice.
On the pieces that have the chrome pieces, Do I paint those with Argent Silver Satin? On the grill itself, what kind of surface prep should I do and what should I paint it with? Or should I just clean it and not paint it at all? |

I think that entirely depends on how it looks after it's been cleaned...sometimes, a good reconditioning is all that's needed.

I thought about possibly cleaning it with a scotch brite and then wipe it down with some 303 protectant. Wasn't sure if it was supposed to be a deep black or just a dark gray since it sits back in there a ways.

Good old Rustoleum semi-flat black is a good match for the bare, black plastic.
I'm told that Eastwood "spray gray" is a good match for the argent silver, but have yet to pick up a can to test it. There **was** a Testor's hobby spray in their Metallizer product line that was a near-perfect match. My OCD got the better of me and I went back to run a second coat but ran out. After securing some discontinued stock, I learned the color formulation had changed (grrrrr...) after the laborious masking, prep, and paint. Live and learn... |

Don't use Scotchbrite, it's an abrasive and will just add scratches to the finish. It's always best to start with gentle cleaning methods (soap and water and a rag), and only move up to harsher methods if necessary.

Thanks Stuart. I'll try to post a few pics this weekend of its current condition for more input.

A light tan Scotchbrite will only leave enough "scratch" for the paint to have a needed bite. Any other color Scotchbrite will cut too much. Yes, those different colors mean something. Also, don't use Rustoleum anything except on metal lawn chairs.

I got to looking at my grill last night. It does not appear that the plastic for the grill was really black. It looks like it was more of a really dark gray than it was black. I think I would only paint it if I make any repairs for cracks.
