'58 Bonneville...reliving my teens
When I was 17, growing up in Baltimore, I bought my first car - a 5-year old '58 Bonneville convertible. Paid $1000 for it. The car was equipped with a Tri-Power 370 engine, leather bench interior, and more chrome than one thought possible. I don't have any pictures of it (weird, I know, but I can't explain why) but it looked like this:
It was wrecked in 1966 (not my fault - it was parked), and I've always wanted another like it. So... thanks to a tip from my friend "Bonneville" Joe Evans in Texas (a fellow 2+2 enthusiast), I found this one on Long Island, NY: Another item checked off the bucket list.

To Pontiacfarmer:
No, it was an estate sale. It needs a light restoration, but it is so original that I am taking it to AACA event in Charlotte in April to compete for an HPOF Award (survivor) before I do anything more than a good cleaning. To 71GP76TA: Have you added both 2+2's to the Registry?

That '58 is amazing - it's really all original? It looks like new.

I wish it did look new - I'd save a ton. It's what I would call a "good 25-footer". Original paint is chipped and faded, worn thin in spots, especially the hood. The carpet has been replaced, but looks great (though monotone - not the correct style with the Lurex thread). Dash pad is solid but foam underneath must be deteriorated, so it's not tight.
That being said, it drives like a dream with 108,000 miles. Everything works, If I had survived the last 60 years with as little effect as this car shows, I'd really feel like the teenager I was when I bought my first '58 back in 1963.

Oops... as we used to say in the military - RTFI. I missed the model year parameters in the headline.
It is still a "Big Pontiac" though, Matt.

Hurst Autostick 1 shifter in my 64 Pontiac..
That shifter was so nice, it bolted to the transmission with direct linkage and was gated.. I put another one on my 69 el Camino, 427/Th400.. Last edited by 389; 04-25-2022 at 05:44 PM. |

I've posted before but here's my '63 after a 9 month heavy maintenance completed, just rolled the odometer over. Steering, suspension, brakes, tires, clutch, trans rebuild, new output shaft, engine compartment freshen up. Planning on driving to Norwalk again.
