Talking PURE STOCK: 1966 Pontiac Lemans OHC 6 SPRINT

I Love the rumble of a finely tuned Pontiac V8,
but also love the sound of the OHC 6 Sprint Pontiac's...

The exhaust for the Sprint/4bbl powered models utilizes a split manifold with a "Y" (2 into 1) pipe into a single 2.25 piped exhaust.
Along the way on the 4bbl engines is a cylindrical low restriction 28'' long muffler then into a low restriction resonator (same as the GTO)
There were 2 different diameter mufflers used from the factory, I have never determined what dictates the use of either/or.
To complete the Sprint Option/package the tailpipe used a Chromed “Trumpet” tip
(Also borrowed from the GTO)
The system was engineered for optimum tuning and balanced to finish the sports car effect DeLorean and his team were after.

Many owners over the years have attempted to improve on the factory system, with in my opinion little benefits.
When looking at the split exhaust manifold one automatically thinks adding duel exhaust should really wake this engine up, not so.
It wasn't designed that way and offers little more than an additional tail pipe.

We have set this 1966 Lemans up with as close to factory exhaust using NOS and matched specification parts to maintain the performance and sound the factory was after.
So just for fun here is our 1966 LEMANS OHC 6 SPRINT OPTION in motion;
ENJOY!

Warm up : http://youtu.be/9fzCgGg6Ddk
Warm engine: http://youtu.be/9Ux_bDJqG5M

Yc 455 (datecode 73) with 6x8 heads, compcam dual valve springe and pushrods retainers etc. with scorpion 1.5 roller rockers. Have no idea what cam is in it, but guessing non stock, since pushrods are 9.450!!!

Stock log exhaust, really bad compression bendt downpipe, into dual 2.5" pipes with flowmaster 40 or 44 series mufflers, no tailpipes.

It took a while, got headers in 2015, and just last weekend i got Pypes SGF11R 2 1/2" installed, i was allocated 6 hours from i enterd the garage til i was supposed to be out, Had to jack up the car put it on pallets , cut down the old system, and install new system with fitting on the spot, clean up everything and roll out. so needless to say i need to go back for round 2 and make minor adjustmens, as there was no time for testing. And it was just me and the tools i broght.

But here is a quick comparison mocked together with free video editing software:

Here's one of dad's car. 571 with 2" super comps into 3 1/2" pipe to a Dr. Gas X, out with 3 inch pipe into a pair of small race mufflers (forget brand) into Torque Tech 3" tail pipes. It's pretty quiet at cruise, no drone, but whales pretty good at full throttle.

I changed around my firebird that I posted previously and it sounds a bit different now. I'll have to make a new one and post that later.

It's called "I built it 20 years ago and I can't afford to change a thing" look....lol!

Truth be told, I wouldn't change a thing. Guess I'm old-school.

Ram Air IV oversized outlet RARE roundport manifolds. Don't know the manufacturer of the downpipes, but they are manderl bent and 2.5 inch. The rest of the system is a flowmaster system (Not my first choice, used it since it was new and on the car when purchased) 2.5 inch mandrel bent with H-pipe. Cut out the flowmaster mufflers and replaced with Texas T/A mufflers.
