A long time ago I bought a CD of exhaust systems that I think was made by Jim Hand. He had a 455 set up on a Dyno, then hooked up a bunch of different exhaust systems on it and recorded the sound. He explained what had been done to the engine (cam, engine work, etc...). He would then start up the engine and let it idle for a bit, then bring it up to about 2000 RPM's and hold it there for a few seconds, then rap the throttle a few times and let it return to idle. He would then tell you what company produced the muffler and what part number it was before moving on to the next system.

I picked the exhaust for my 67 GTO by listening to that CD. I still have it somewhere around here.

Before the internet I assume?

Nowadays most exhaust companies have a pretty extensive archive of sound clips to listen to with various types of cars and engine combinations.

Here is a picture of the CD. It looks like it was made in 2001 by Murray Ford, Jim Hand and Tom Hand.

I have tried many different mufflers over the last 30 years and I always end up going back to the Turbo muffler. My favorite muffler is the Dynomax Super Turbo #17749. It has a pleasant, mellow tone that gets better with use..

Remember Tiger glass packs? They usually sounded great for the first thousand miles then the stuffing would blow out and they sounded like hell.... Douglass also made nice sounding glass packs.. The perforated core mufflers with the big can seemed to sound best to me..
