Pypes exhaust system review - 1969 A-body
Thought I'd post a quick review in the hopes that the information provided here proves useful to board members
System: Pypes 2.5" SGA10 with std. downpipes Mufflers: DynoMax 20" super turbo Summary: High quality components that need a lot of work for a factor fit. First, the quality of the tubing and bend work is excellent. No complaints regarding the material and bends. However, serious work was required to get this system to fit in a way I deem is acceptable. Every, and I mean EVERY, pipe supplied had to be cut and/or modified. As supplied, the mufflers would have hung down unacceptably low. this is due to the fact the the the pipes from the X to the mufflers are not designed to follow the floor's contour. they are straight and do not place the mufflers in the stock location. The pipes from the X to the mufflers were significantly modified to get the muffles in the stock location. Refer to attached picture. Shown are modified rear pipes with offset to position mufflers in the correct location. Raising the mufflers required modification to the tailpipes as well. The end result is good, closely emulating the look of factory system from the side and rear. As with most aftermarket high performance parts, one cannot expect a simple bolt-in system that fits like a factory component. I pity the guy who buys one of these systems and only has a floor jack, jack stands and a hack saw. If you're looking for a "bolt-on" system that fits up nice and tight like a stock system, look elsewhere. But if you are looking for a high quality, high performance system and can make modifications or don't care about matching factory fit, the Pypes system is a good value. |

You are right on with your comments. I have installed 5 Pypes's systems on A and F body cars and that's the only thing I don't like about them. If Pypes bent those two pipes to raise the mufflers and made up for it in the tailpipes they would have a A+system.

Agreed. I don't understand why they don't bend those pipes correctly. Not hard to do. Lazy? Ignorant? Profit?

I have similiar experiences with my Trans Am Pypes system. If Pypes just went a little bit further with the R&D, they would really have something. I am one of those hobbyist folks that does not have access to a pipe bender or a lift. I do have a MIG, power saw, and some experience.

The F-body system should not need such an upgraded option. The x-pipe for that system runs very high utilizing the driveshaft tunnel and therefore the mufflers are tucked up very high.

Any estimate on when these new pipes will be available? And would you folks exchange uninstalled pipes for payment of the price differential?

I'm not sure why the customer has to pay more for a properly engineered system when it was done wrong the first time....? The price should remain the same and the old improperly engineered system should be discounted to get rid of old stock.

This gives you a choice of two systems. You can purchase whatever one you feel suits your needs and your budget.

Having a little trouble with fitment on the new tailpipes. We just ran another pair and now we could use a GTO to test them on. Anyone from Philadelphia want to volunteer and get a brand new $500 system and installation for free?

Id volunteer but I already have a Pypes system on my Judge.. Are the new tailpipes going to have the correct downward slash or are they coming out straight out the back? If they are the correct downward slash I am in with my car

Correct. However, the main reason you would still consider the old system is because it is less expensive. The HP loss by adding the additional bends is not that significant with the rebuilds of today. Both kits increase HP significantly over a stock or local made compression bent system.

Since it is not completed, we have nothing uploaded at this point. The PY Forums is the only place we are talking about this kit. We'd like to keep it that way until we have finished the development.

Good question! Let me find out if that kit is finished yet. In September, we lost our Pypes Product Development Manager to a competitor. In December, we got him back. So we lost a little time there. However, I'm pretty sure we got that project back on track and in production. Let me confirm.
