Default 1969 trans am race car

Just came across this picture. It was at the 1st Nascar race at Talladega in 1969. The regular drivers sat out because of Tire problems. Bill France hired some of the Trans Am racers to fill the field. Does anyone know any history on this car? Thanks Jim

"with engine failure" seems to be a common description of the performance of Pontiac race cars in the time frame our cars were built

Did not seem to be an issue for Smokey. Speeds must have gotten higher?

I meant the late 60's, I guess the lack of official factory support and the rising speeds made the by then dated (1955) Pontiac engine not really competitive or dependable at the top strata of competition.

pretty sure they ran the 366 NASCAR block with a RA IV heads and a warrior intake. Most of those blocks had a provision for dry sump oiling. All lifter bores were joined and had a stronger thrust area and the larger dist gear.Tom

Many Firebirds in the Trans Am Series used the Chevrolet 302. It would be pretty cool to find out if he had the 366 V motor. On the high banks I am almost certain it would have to run dry sump oiling either way.

Looks like it’s blowing up in the picture look at the smoke coming out the back.
